Miracle Mountain

Rolling thunder, gentle falling rain, the smell of freshly baked cookies from the kitchen, and the muffled sounds of Joel at play in his room seemed to enhance the hush that surrounded her.  Jenny's thoughts kept her from the book that lay in her lap.  Her favorite place in all the world was her window seat.  It allowed her to see the stables, the rolling pastures surrounded by white fencing that seemed to stretch for miles, and the mountains, those awesome mountains!

Her thoughts carried her back to the day she came face to face with her own
personal mountain and her heart quickened a beat just remembering.  She was to meet Blaze, the horse purchased just for her.

"How can I possibly!!" she remembered thinking anxiously, "I'm so afraid!  Mama, why...WHY must I get on a horse?  They're so BIG and I'm afraid", her thoughts cried out, "I'm afraid I'll fall or he will bite me or step on me", her thoughts racing as well as her heart.

The walk to the stables felt to her like the last walk of the condemned.  Then, emerging from the shadow of the stable, she watched as this magnificent creature was led into the brilliant sunlight and he was true to his name.  His coat was like a blazing fire radiating the sunlight from withers to tail, his mane and tail a contrasting black, long and wavy.  His gentle eyes were on her as the gap between them closed.
Curiously, he stretched his nose to her face, her hair, her hand as she trembled within, thinking, "he's so very VERY big!!"  As though to assure her of his kindness, he leaned slowly down, touching her head with his nose and thus he stood, motionless, till he felt her relax and let go of her fear with a deep sigh.  Then he nuzzled her hand, urging her to stroke his nose.

"It feels like velvet", she thought wondrously, "so warm and soft and it tickles when he nuzzles my neck", she giggled hesitantly, fearing he would be frightened by her sound.

This special bonding helped her overcome her fear.  Her first lesson she did as instructed...  reaching for the handles on the surcingle and then pulling with her arms to enable her to stretch her leg across his back, slowly pushing to a sitting position.  Quietly and flawlessly, Blaze began to move forward as Jenny clung to the surcingle, terror rising within her.  Blaze snuffled, as though to say, "Don't be afraid, little one, you can trust me...I'll never hurt you".

With each day, Jenny became more confident and soon had reached the point of 'independant riding'.  Each day she advanced until she was riding 'walk, trot, and canter' with ease, the bond between them growing deeper and stronger, uniting them forever.

This summer storm would pass quickly.  Jenny's thoughts, slowly returning to the present, began to make plans for the day.

"Blaze could do with a good grooming", she thought, "and it's too wet to ride so I'll just spend time with him.  He smells so good and he's always so very careful when I'm in his stall...as though he knows.  To think I once feared him...my own majestic mountain.  A miracle?  Maybe!  God knows I'm not the same frightened girl and I can only believe it would have taken a miracle to free me from my prison of fear!"  She smiled thoughtfully as her eyes turned to the stable.

"Blaze, my miracle mountain...I'll be there soon."
