May 2005 - South Africa
This trip seems to have really opened up Daisy's eyes.  Notice how she ponders the effects of racial inequality.  And I am glad to hear that she is making sure that she stays healthy as she travels.
Dear Mom and Dad -
I have been in Cape Town the past several days, where I have climbed to the top of Table Mountain and visited Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years.  My travel companions and I learned a lot about the history of apartheid.  It is sad and shocking that such violence and injustice were a part of daily life in South Africa only a decade or so ago.  I wonder whether I would have been considered white or coloured had I been here in the '80's?
On a lighter note, tomorrow we are off to the Cape Peninsula to see the Cape of Good Hope and some South African penguins.
I am happy to report I am thus far malaria and typhoid free; who knew mosquitoes are more dangerous than fleas?!
     Miss you all very much!
     Love, Daisy
^ Daisy in front of Robben Island.  On a clear day, there is a fabulous view of Table Mountain.  Unfortunately, Daisy was there on a rainy and foggy day.
^ Daisy overlooking the Cape of Good Hope.  This is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet and one of the most treacherous locations to navigate.  The Portuguese originally named it the Cape of Storms, but their king renamed it in hope of a successful spice trade.
Daisy at Cape Point, south of Cape Town.  The ocean below is littered with shipwrecks despite a lighthouse located here.
