Schroeder's
Lung Biopsy
While Schroeder was sedated for his lung x-rays the veterinarian pulled two lung biopsy's and performed a tracheal wash since the lung x-rays were cloudy.   Both biopsy's were negative as was the tracheal wash.  Our other veterinarian thinks this cloudiness is strictly age related, but since it can not be ruled out that these lung changes are cancer related Schroeder is no longer a candidate for amputation.

We were going to try amputation in the beginning, but decided against it when we could find no other successful large dog amputations.  We also could not escape an uneasy feeling about removing Schroeder's leg in an effort to prolong his life 'maybe' another six months.  The change just felt too drastic for us, and for him.

Our first veterinarian was completely against amputation due to Schroeder weighing 130 pounds. After watching the cancer progress we decided that we would not be doing our job as parents if we did not seek a second opinion.  Our second veterinarian thought Schroeder would do allright with only three legs.  He even offered to set up a meeting with us and his best friend who has a Rottweiler with only three legs.  He changed his mind upon viewing Schroeder's lung x-rays.
