| The marriage was blessed with 7 children and the 5th thereof was a son, Cornelis Janse who was baptised on the 31st January 1762. On the 11 November 1781 at the young age of scarcely 19 Cornelis joined with Elsabe Swart in marriage at Stellenbosch and 7 children also resulted from this marriage. I do not know where Cornelis and Elsabe lived, but Cornelis died young in 1804. At the time of his death his oldest daughter Elzabe was married to Matthys Johannes Lourens: presumably a nephew. The oldest two children of Cornelis and Elzabe were much older than the others, the third being 8 years later. By the time of his death their greatest single asset was a slave Francina van Mocambique, who with her two children Willem and Moses was purchased for 1400 Rixdollars. Someone had inspected the slave for seven days prior to the auction and the fee for that was more than 3 Rixdollars. I don't know whether that was expensive or cheap. If it was a good buy perhaps there were other side benefits which went with the slave. | |||||||||||
| The 2nd child was a son, who naturally had his Oupa's (Grandfather's) name, although at this stage it was modified to Matthys Johannes. The 3rd child was also a son and he was christened Johannes Gerhardus on 19 November 1793 | |||||||||||
| As I later explain more fully, the farmers whose stock increased and who needed more space trekked to the more eastern part of the country, and Johannes Gerhardus probably trekked with them, as at the age of 19 he was married in Caledon to Jacoba Petronella Swart, the daughter of Jacobus Swart who had married Maria Swart on 22nd April 1781. After this, the Lourens family was found chiefly in the region which is known today as Heidelberg, Riversdale, and Caledon, and the family had many marriages with the families Swart, Uys and Pieters. These four names are still today frequently found in these areas, and also the surroundings of Bredasdorp and Napier. | |||||||||||
| Johannes and Jacoba originally farmed on the farm Hottentotsbos in the district of Riverdale, and their children were also born and grew up there. As time passed by he became wealthier and in due course he farmed on another two farms Miertjieskraal and Krommeklof on the district of Riversdale. At the time of his death these farms were sold as assets in his estate and I assume that they must have been mortgaged (leased?). The estate accounts also show a town plot in Riversdale which was sold for 30 Pounds. presumably held for retirement or a Nagmaal (communion) house. | |||||||||||
| Oupa Johannes and Ouma (Grandma) Jacoba had 10 children, five sons and five daughters. Apparently he lacked trust in the husbands of his two youngest daughters because their inheritance specified that they might only use the income until their deaths, when the capital would go to their children. The amount mentioned was 21 Pounds. This inheritance also included the family of Jacobus, his 2nd son, who was murdered before his own death. Johannes died on the 3rd February 1866 at the age of a litte over 72 years, while his wife died on 21st May at the ripe old age of 84 years. | |||||||||||
