Jimmy Palmiotti

as interviewed by Daisy Holzapfel
Daisy: What have you been working on lately Jimmy?  What have you been particularly excited about?  Feel free to plug away!

Jimmy:
21 down has to be on the top of the list because I am co writing the series with Justin Gray, and I am also inking the book as well, which makes us control freaks all warm and fuzzy inside.  The cool thing is, that the series is going to be collected into trade books this fall, so new people can catch up on the fun.

The other projects I am having a great time on are Reload and Two-Step, both written by Warren Ellis.  Other than that, there are 2 new series not announced yet that are going to hit this winter that pretty much are going to rattle a few cages here and there, I hope.

Daisy: As far as conventions go, which do you consider to be the best and which are the worst, city or otherwise, and why?

Jimmy: Love Wizard World Chicago...just wish it was closer to the actual city, for the nightlife.  The Philly show rocks cause its in the nexus of the city.

San Diego is a blast, mostly to see everyone, and I one-day hope to be invited as a special guest. Megacon is always a blast.  What sucks is that there are no major cons in NYC, but Mocca is coming soon, and I will be there.  Any con outside the states are great...the ones that suck...well, I just don't do anymore.

Daisy: Do you have any good, or even or particularly horrible, convention party stories?  Which cities party the hardest?

Jimmy:
San Diego probably is the hardest on me because everyone needs a bit of my time, and every night there is a party to attend, so it gets a bit crazy at times.

As far as stories from cons, well...my stories revolve around sexual encounters...and I am discreet, so I really cant say much.  Other than that, a lot of drunken tales are waiting to be written into a book sometime soon.

Daisy:
Is there any specific kind of convention-going fan that just annoys the living bejesus out of you?  A certain kind you desperately try to avoid
Jimmy: Well...I avoid rude people, or people who badmouth others.  Most of the fans though are pretty cool and nice and usually have something positive to say.  Even if they are negative, as long as they are polite, all is cool.

Daisy:
You might really have to wrack your brain to come up with an answer for this one, but what is the strangest thing you have ever seen, or has happened at a con?

Jimmy:
It would have to be the unusual things I have been asked to sign. A half eaten hot-dog, a baby's diaper, a lot of women's breasts, a girls ass, a bald guys head, a bowling ball, beer bottles, a Dennys menu, bowling shoes, and a girls neck.

Daisy: When we met, you made it pretty clear that youre a big music fan.  Any certain type or bands that you really like?

Jimmy: I like all music.  Grew up loving all that 70 and 80s new wave stuff, Beatles, Stray Cats, Stones, AC/DC...and now I listen to a bit of everything, John Barry, Cocteau Twins, Bjork, ect.... classical in the morning...hard rock and island music in the car.  I do love music...its a big part of my life.

Daisy: Have you, at any point in your life, been a musician yourself?

Jimmy:
I took piano lessons and learned, after 8 lessons, I suck. I can sing and have great rhythm...but I am a music appreciator, not maker.

Daisy: Has there been any instance when music has influenced the work you did in comics?

Jimmy: I had 2 ex girlfriends that were in bands, and they influenced me to stay out of that business totally. I think when writing, its important to listen to music that can inspire what work you are doing.  I wish comics came with soundtracks.

Daisy: I think youre really fantastic at writing female characters. Personally, I think youd be a great Buffy writer.  Have you ever thought about that, or even watched the show for that matter?  What do you watch on TV?  Do you watch TV?

Jimmy:
Do not watch Buffy...like 24 and some other shows, I feel like I came in too late.  I love Fastlane, Law and Order, Enterprise, John Doe, 6 Feet Under, ect...but don't always have the time to watch them. I really am a movie nut.

Daisy: Who would win in a fight: Elvis the king of rock n roll, or Jack King Kirby?

Jimmy:
Well, they are both dead, and Im guessing fat Elvis would just fall and crush Jack, or whatever is left of him.  To tell the truth, I would be more interested in knowing what they were fighting over.
