| Is Your O.C A Mary Sue? | ||||||||
| Notes: I've adapted this from various Mary Sue Litmus tests floating around on the net, and am writing this as if your O.C is a girl. If not, use your imagination. One point awarded for every 'yes' answer. Section 1 - The Name Game --> Does your character have a cool nickname? --> Is the character's name unusual in any way? Possible points for this section: 2 Section 2 - Physical Attributes --> Is the character exceptionally good-looking? --> Does one or more of the regulars find the character highly attractive? --> Does the character have an unusual eye color for no apparent reason? --> Does the character's eye colour change throughout the story? Possible points for this section: 4 Section 3 - Personal Traits --> Does everyone like your character? --> Is she related to any of the cannon characters? (I.e, Orion, Bombay, one of the Ducks) --> Does your character have a tragic back story? --> Is your character a twin or sibling of a cannon character? --> Does your character have a talent? --> Does she play hockey? If so: --> Is she better than Adam / more captain-like than Charlie / faster than Luis / a better puck handler than Dwayne? --> Does she start on Varsity and somehow get transferred to the Ducks? --> Is she related to anyone on Varsity? (Double points if it's Cole, Riley or Scooter) --> Is she a bad girl? --> Is she suicidal/depressed? --> Is there some "mistake" and your O.C is rooming with a male member of the Ducks? --> Are the cannon characters jealous of her? Possible points for this section: 14 If you answered 'yes' to 18 or more of these questions, I'm afraid you have yourself a Sue. Please, be kind and put her out of her misery before readers of you fan fiction do. Does your character have a cool nickname? Why? If it's a shorter version of her name, then that's fair play. But why call your O.C Ace if her name is Susan? A mistake some writer's make is that they don't describe why she gets called a certain nickname, and readers are forever trying to figure out what they're reading, because the character goes from being called 'Lisa' to being called 'Ice'. Is the character's name unusual in any way? Again, why? In this day and age, more and more names are taking on a unique or individual edge. So, it's cool to have a different uncommon name for your O.C, but don't make it so weird that your readers can't quite grasp what the name is. Is the character exceptionally good-looking? Your character is allowed to be pretty. There are no rules that say your O.C has to be butt ugly, but keep in mind, no one is perfect, and the last thing readers of your story want to see is a whole paragraph devoted to just exactly how blue your character's eyes are. People aren't perfect, even made up ones. Does one or more of the regulars find the character attractive? Your character is allowed to be seen as attractive. But how often is it you see four friends in real life in love with the same girl at the same time? No one is that perfect to have that many people in love with them at once, and if they are, they're a cyborg. Does the character have an unusual eye colour for no apparent reason? Who really needs red contacts with gold flecks? Does the character's eye colour change throughout the story? Is this because it's too much effort to open up Microsoft Word and see what you wrote back in chapter one? Trust me, readers notice these things. Does everyone like your character? They're allowed to be liked. But if Adam, Charlie, Averman, Goldberg and Luis are all crushing on your character, you should look at your story and ask yourself if it's believeable. Is she related to any of the cannon characters? (i.e Orion, Bombay, one of the Ducks) Is this because you couldn't think of any other way to get them into Eden Hall without having to add a whole other chapter? Not all relations go to the same school. People can just as easily share a class together or run into each other in the cafeteria line. Does your character have a tragic back story? Why? So on a particulary vulnerable evening, she can confess to Charlie and have him hold her while she cries herself to sleep? Is your O.C a twin or sibling of a cannon character? Is this because it would add a lot of tension between Fulton and Portman, if Fulton's little sister fell for Dean? Does your character have a talent? Is she the best singer / dancer / writer / actor in her class? Some people are lucky enough to have talents, some are not. You won't lose readers just because your O.C can't sing to save her life, or act to win an Oscar. Does she play hockey? If so: --> Is she better than Adam / more captain-like than Charlie / faster than Luis / a better puck handler than Dwayne? & --> Does she start out on Varsity but somehow ends up on the Ducks? Having your O.C play hockey is a good way to have her meet the Ducks. But, if she's better at the things that make them special (e.g, if she's a better goalie than Julie, or a better figure skater than Ken), it makes it harder for the readers to relate to and like your character. We love the Ducks because they're unique, so if some new character comes along claiming to be better, it's gonna alienate a few people. Is she related to anyone on Varsity? (Double points if it's Cole, Riley or Scooter) Again, if your O.C is related to a member of Varsity, except sparks. We all know the Varsity is a bone of contention with the Ducks, so can you imagine what would happen if Charlie fell in love with Riley's little sister? Is she a bad girl? Does she back chat to the teachers and was caught TP-ing the library? We all know a bag girl attracts attention, that's why your O.C is naughty, isn't it? Is she suicidal/depressed? Why? Is there a "mistake" and your O.C is rooming with a male member of the Ducks? Oh please. If this was the case, Eden Hall, or wherever, would be shut down. People of the opposite sex can't share rooms, can you imagine all the disgruntled parents ringing up about unwanted teen pregnancies and gang bangs? Are the cannon characters jealous of her? If so, why? Because she's so pretty, or the fact Adam is in love with her and Julie wants to kill her because Adam belongs to her? Jealousy is common, but make sure it's believeable. Generally, not many people hate their friends for being better looking. Which Mighty Ducks Mary Sue Are You? -- bought to you by Queertet.net Which Species Of Mary Sue Are You? -- Quizilla |
