Japan on the March--
AGAIN.
As Japanese pop culture sweeps across the globe, one region in particular is forced to again face some ugly issues from the past.  Along with the cuddly character goods, over-the-top fashions, and hi-tech electronics that Japan stands for in the minds of many Asian young people, it symbolizes something much more sinister for many of the older generation.  Particularly in countries such as South Korea or China, where colonial and war-time memories have not been fully forgotten, there are those that see this new wave of Japanese cultural importation as the old imperialism back, only in a different guise.
Next month, we will examine in depth the dynamics surrounding Japanese pop culture's advance into every corner of Asia.
