| Places You Should Go: EAST VILLAGE Typhoon St. Mark's Place between 1st and 2nd Ave. A real deal Japanese feeling Izakaya- don't pay any attention to the Spanish hacienda arcitecture left over from the former occupants. *Derek recommends the Kani Cream Croquettes. Yakiniku West 9th St. between 2nd and 3rd Ave. $9.99 for kalbi? That should be all I need to say, but there's ice cream thrown into the deal too. That's cheap, and tasty. Dojo St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd Ave. No real Japanese food, but $2 beers (Bud, Bud Light, Rolling Rock). If you're really hungry you can have the yaki soba. Rai Rai Ken 10th St. between 1st and 2nd Ave. High grade ramen, home-made gyoza and a super funky staff. Has authentic Tokyo feel- very small and crowded. MIDTOWN Kum Gang San 32nd St. between 5th Ave. and Broadway Somewhat gaudy Korean restaurant with very tasty kalbi, bulgogi, etc. Not many places feature a waterfall, grand piano and fully Hanbok-ed hostesses. Of course, the meat dishes being $20 or so does help defray costs for all that fanciness. Menchanko-Tei 55th St. between 5th and 6th Ave. A very nice and wide selection of noodles and more greets visitors to this midtown shop. Good for lunch or dinner. Be sure to try the Hakata ramen. |
