| DAIHINMIN MASTERS | ||||||||||
| Daihinmin is a traditional Japanese card game in which various rules simulate political and military actions, coups and revolutions, natural disasters and so on. It is probably of Chinese origin, stemming (along with the Vietnamese Tien Len and the Western Asshole or President) from the Chinese Zheng Shangyou. Daihinmin, means literally big loser. Daihinmin is a distinctively Japanese game as the winner tends to keep winning and the loser keeps getting pushed further down. I am an American university English language teacher living in Japan. I have lived here for nearly ten years and have been playing Daihinmin for nearly as long. I waas taught the game by another foreigner. In my conversations about Daihinmin I have found that most Japanese have heard of the game, but not many know how to play it. Those who have heard of it recall playing it or having seen it played in their school days; and those who claim to know how to play have tended to be able only to relate the most basic rules. To hear it from them, Daihinmin is not a very impressive game; but Daihinmin is a game or rules. Long ago, back in the States, a friend (who coincidentally is now teaching in Niigata, Japan) postulated the idea of a game called Rules, which conisted of an endless explanation of how to play the game. It really was endless and so the players never actually got to play. Daihinmin is that game with the exception that the list of rules isn't really endless though at fgirst it seems that way; but you'll never get to play unless you read the Rules page. On the rules page, you'll find a complete (as far as I can tell) list of the rules of this great game. This list begins with the classic rules. That is followed by a list of optional rules that I have come across from native Japanese players from various regions. Finally, there is a list of house rules which we have found to be a lot of fun and which we feel are not in contradiction with the true spirit of Daihinmin. More than just a list of games though, you'll benefit from the experience of hundreds of hours I and my cohorts have spent playing and discussing the rules. Along with each rule, I have provided an example of how the rule can be used as well as a bit of explication on how the rule interacts with or in some cases nuetralizes other rules. As I hear about more rules, I'll be sure to post them. We would love to hear from any other players out there who know of rules not listed here. |
