THE SITE OF TORMENT AND MORAL DECAY
Lets take a look at the origin of the word "um". There are many theories but the popular theory is that it dates back to the neadrathal man, or caveman. At that time vocabulary was limited and the word "um" actually originated and evolved from the word "ugh". The caveman used "ugh" to describe almost anything, from objects, to emotions, it was the only way to communicate. As time went on and man evolved, vocabulary was establised, "ugh" became forgotton. However, probably in the early 19th century as the population of the world started to lose propriety in speech, (such as swearing, and manipulation of words, contractions, etc) "um" surfaced.
Others believe "um" is closely related to "ugh" but it doesn't involve evolution of vocabulary. They believe they are two very distinct words not associated with each other. "Ugh" is more of a lazy expression, used during stretching, or also used when lifting a heavy object. "Um" became a hesitation, which buyed time while drawing blanks in conversation.
There is no doubt about the popularity of "Um". Everyone likes it, everyone uses it. Yet it gets no credit in Websters Dictionary which is a modern day trajedy. I believe it deserves recognition and should be included as a credited word. "Um" is a word that we all have in common, from scholars to morons. It is used now, more than any time in history.
"Um" is not used often in script. Such as news programs which use teleprompters for the news crew. In that case "um" becomes unnecessary because the news crew only ability required it to look good, and to be literate. If they had to ad lib, I bet "um" will be used, and used well.
Another unique fact about the word "um" is that it is a stretching word. Many words serve this purpose but "um" works better than all of them. You can extend "um" for a long duration, even as long as you have breath in your lungs. Try doing that with words that end in a "k". Can you stretch "k" out for more than a second. No, it is humanly impossible. And also in this instance, "um" can assume the role of humming.
So I say, be proud, use "um" as much as you like. And for all the students out there, to piss off your teachers who don't like you to use the word "um" in class speeches, make your speech on the word "um". I wish I thought of it when I was in school.
You might be sacrificing a grade, but you would have earned my respect.
