Black Tiger has got to be my favorite game of all the coin ops. If I am an expert in anything it would have to be this game. I've played this game since I was 12 years old. I don't know what it is about it. Of course when it was taken out of the arcade that I used to go to I was upset and searched other places for the game. That was during the good old days when these games were also in convience stores. My brothers and my friends knew I liked it a lot and would tell me if they ever found it somewhere else which they did and off I went to go and play it. But the sad day came when it was gone forever and it became a distant memory. I got older and lost interest in video games. I pretty much lost interest after Mortal Kombat 3. Then when I got a computer, I started searching for old video games and I came across MAME. Once I opened it up I saw a huge listing of games that they emulated. And obviously the first game I searched for was Black Tiger. Then came my renewed interest in the old classics I used to play.

Black Tiger runs on the MAME emulator and works very well. It is exactly like playing the game in the arcade. There is also another emulator that is specific for Black Tiger but I haven't used it yet. You can get the MAME emulator from the MAME website. click here
You might find it difficult to find the version that works best for you, I'm not sure if there is a MAC version, I think there is MACMAME but I'll check someday. However if you would like to try the game without using the emulator.

The game works, just read the keyboard controls on the side. It is good to sample the game but the screen is small and I don't like the way the controls were set up. The jump button is the space bar which is too far to reach since the shoot button is the Ctrl key. The jump button should have been the ALT key. If you like it get the MAME Emulator and the rom for this game. Of course since the MAME Emulator and other emulators came around, Mr. Copyright has decided to show his face. Its not just Napster people. I know copyright protection is needed, but I also think that a lot of these roms should become public domain. These arcade games are obsolete. You might be able to find them somewhere but mostly they are gone. So what sites tell you is that you have to own the actual game in order to have a legal version of the rom. You can own it as your back up legally or delete it off your hard drive after 24 hours. I can't believe these people still want to profit off these games. Maybe they want to have a napster for video game roms where you can purchase the rom and royalties will be given to the programmers, designers, sound composers and all others involved. I doubt that will happen. There probably isn't as much of a demand for the old coin op games as there is for music. So a lot of the rom sites have been shut down. They are still somewhat easy to get if you search for them but it is harder than it was a year ago.

I really wish that they had made a sequel to this game. I know that a lot of the fans from other coin op games such as Splatterhouse (another favorite) have started a petition for them to make a sequel of Splatterhouse for the Sony Playstation 2. (They wouldn't do it of course for Nintendo Game Cube, and the X-Box is losing popularity). I have a feeling that Black Tiger is long forgotton and will never have a sequel (However Magic Sword is considered an unofficial sequel to this game). For that matter I'm not even sure Splatterhouse will. This is my tribute to my favorite coin op game, Black Tiger.
- Here is a bit of some new information about the game. From other websites and information I could find about Black Tiger supposively there is only one spot in the game where you can find a free life. However, just recently as of January 1, 2003 I found out that there is another spot in the game where you can get a free life. It just makes me wonder if there are any more secrets left.
Here is a site dedicated to world record high scores for arcade games emulated on MAME. I'm the number one score for black tiger with 1,285,150 points. However, the person under me did complete the game on the highest difficulty level which means I'll still have to beat him on that. click here

This is a picture from the Mame high score site and it proves that someone did get 1,179,250 points on black tiger. Its supposed to be the MAME World Record proven with an inp file. I am trying to beat this score.

Well, I finally did it. I beat the all time high score. My final score was 1,285,150. This score is 100% legitimate. I have screenshots and an inp file which recorded the game plus the configuration file that shows that I didn't cheat. The previous high score with an inp file is 1,179,250. The Mame World Rankings high score is 1,208,050. I thought that this score was impossible. But I beat it and I know I can still top this. I do know that it is possible to put a cheat into the game where you can have infinate lives. If that is the case then I would be able to have the maximum score allowed but I don't want to cheat. Plus to be eligible for the Twin Galaxies World Record book you have to comply with the TG settings. No cheats, no saving, no pauses, no continues and it has to be proven with the inp file from MAME.

This is my highest score I got on Black Dragon. The game is pretty much the same as Black Tiger except a few items are in different spots and since I played this on the maximum difficulty level it was more difficult but this is my score. This score is higher than what my record score is on MARP. They have a rule that you have to use Alphamame in order for your high scores to be considered. Its just so they know you didn't cheat. So I didn't sumbit this because I used regular MAME. Even thought this score is also legit. Alphamame works poorly on my computer.

Long ago, three evil drgons descended from the skies and brought a nightmare of darkness and destruction to a once peaceful kingdom. From this suffering, emerged a powerful and brave warrior who fought against the demonic Dragons and Demons to restore law and order in his homeland.

BLACK TIGER LEVEL ONE
The first level can be completed pretty quickly unless you want to go for points. One strategy is to clear the level of the enemies before going into the dungeon and do it as quickly as possible. Leave the one hour glass at the top where you go to fight the boss. Don't buy a weapon unless you want to try them out. Then spend all the rest of your time in the dungeon and leave at about 20 seconds. Pick up the other hour glass and you will have more than enough time to kill the boss. I usually leave the level with 1400 to 1500 zenny coins. There are three secrets on this level. Click the links below to see where they are.

BLACK TIGER LEVEL TWO You have to be quite fast on this level. If you know what you are doing and you are at the point when you get to the dungeon, before going in clear the area around the dungeon. Then you can spend the rest of the time in the dungeon killing skeletons for points if your strategy is for a high score. This level also adds mummies into the game. They come out of caves and are generally easy to kill. The boss is the same except there are 4 to kill instead of 2 like the first level. Click links to see secrets to this level.

The third level is when you encounter the first of the 3 dragons. Time is very important on this level and you have to move quickly. I have died numerous times by the clock running out. The dragon on this level is quite easy and the best way to kill it is aim for the head. There is one secret for this level which is pretty obvious and its unlikely that anyone will miss it.
Secret One

BLACK TIGER LEVEL FOUR Level four is the level where you will might be able to get the fireball weapon(assuming you are playing on easy level) if you have decided to try and make it here with only the 100 zenny weapon. But if you use that strategy make sure you have enough before you fight the boss or you will not be able to kill it (unless you are a freak). Otherwise you should have the 2400 zenny weapon which will be just fine to get through the level. There is a lot to look out for on this level. There are lava pits and you now have to contend with the grim reaper. Some of the mummies are a bit more powerful. Usually when you duck while they attack they will spit fire over you. But sometimes they will duck too and spit fire at you which will likely hit you.
Secret One

BLACK TIGER LEVEL FIVE When you get to this level the game becomes much more difficult. It has lots of pits with spikes you have to jump over and there are usually surprises on the other side of the pit where you have to react quickly. When I first played the boss on this level I found him to be impossible. Until I learned the weakness and now the boss unfortunately is really easy. If you want to kill him just stand just in front of him and keep jumping up and down and shooting him in the face. It will stay still and will keep throwing flame spells but they will miss you. There are 3 secrets on this level.
Secret One Secret Two

BLACK TIGER LEVEL SIX Level six is an easy level to make mistakes. It has large pits to jump over full of spikes and some jumps you have to be moving, jump right at the edge and you will barely land on the other side. This is the level where you encounter the second dragon. It is the same as the first dragon except it casts fire spells. Just use the same method to kill it. You need about a minute on the clock to kill it. Click the links to see secrets for this level.

BLACK TIGER LEVEL SEVEN This level is quite difficult. It has a lot of hard jumps to get across. There is also one jump (see picture)that requires a bit of fancy keyboard work or joystick work. It is just before you are about to fight the boss. The jump looks impossible but if you do it right you will make the jump. If you are using your keyboard you have to jump while holding up and then when you are high enough hit the right key and let go of the up key. I don't know why they made this jump in the first place. It took me a while to master it. If you don't make it you have a long fall and will have to get back quickly before time is out. This level also has the second free life in the game. It is hidden and you can look at it clicking the links.
Secret One Secret Two

BLACK TIGER LEVEL EIGHT This level throws everything at you and is very difficult. It would have been more difficult if they had pits on this level. But they make up for it with all lots of traps, enemies hiding in the pots, the ninjas which are not the easiest to defeat. And of course the last dragon. Just before you fight the dragon there is a frozen man who will stay there all the time so you can always get armor. If you die and still have lives left he will still be there. The dragon has a lot of hit points but just follow the same strategy and you will kill him. Make sure you have about 1 minute on the clock. It will be enough time to kill the dragon. BLACK TIGER CHARACTERS

BLACK TIGER - This is the main character in the game. He has a variety of weapons and armor that he can use. As you increase in levels and gain zenny coins he will become more powerful.

POISONED BLACK TIGER - When Black Tiger is poisoned he is in a lot of trouble. He becomes weaker and for some reason he loses the 3 knives that accompany his weapon. I also found out that his weapon does only half damage. Black Tiger will not lose the poison until he gets a vitality potion or the frozen man heals him. If he already has one he won't get poisoned. It will just take away one of his potions. (For some reason I remember getting poisoned in the arcade and sometimes the joystick movement would reverse itself, left became right, right became left. It has never happened to me with the MAME version however I usually never get poisoned)

ENEMIES

GOBLIN - This is the first enemy you will meet in Black Tiger. He is usually quite easy and changes many colors during the course of the game. He gets harder as levels increase and if you try to skip buying weapons so you can get the good one fast, you might lose lives trying to kill one of these guys. He attacks you with his battle axe. Here is a hint, if you hear a noise when you hit him he is a stronger goblin.

FIRE DEMON - The Fire Demon is on every level of the game. He usually takes quite a few shots and usually leaves 50 zenny coins after you kill him. The only thing about him is that when it throws fire, the fire stays burning for a bit and if you are in the fire it will keep hurting you.

SKELETON - These guys are on every level of the game. They are weak and it only takes one hit to kill them. Sometimes if you take too long to kill them they will take their heads off and throw them at you. After you kill them they leave 1 zenny coin, sometimes 5.

PURPLE SKELETON - These skeletons are encountered at higher levels in the game. They have the abilty to poison you. They also leave around 10 zenny coins when you kill them.

FIRE MUMMY - The Fire Mummy makes its first appearence on level 2 and continues for all the rest of the levels. It usually comes out of caves and is pretty easy to kill. After you kill one mummy wait at the cave because another one will come after it. The mummy shoots fire at a long distance and usually only gets it off when you have to fight other things on the screen.

PURPLE FIRE MUMMY - Like the purple skeleton, this Fire Mummy also will poison you. It appears on later levels and some of these mummies are more difficult. If the mummy jumps around and spits fire a lot you will know that its one of the stronger mummies. Just keep firing and dodge its attacks. The best way is to get distance and make sure you have some vitality potions or you will poisoned on a hit.

GRIM REAPER HAG- The grim reaper appears on level 4. It can be annoying to kill since it takes a few hits depending on the weapon you have to kill it. Once you hit it, it vanishes then reappears. It keeps repeating this until you kill it. And if you don't hit it in time, it will cast a fire spell on you and you will have to dodge the fire. Sometimes it will appear inside a wall which you can't shoot. Other times your weapon will go slightly into the wall and will kill the reaper but it will leave its zenny coins in the wall so you can't get it. The Reapers usually leave 100 to 500 zenny coins.

PURPLE REAPER HAG- This reaper has poison fire. And if you touch it, you will be poisoned. Aside from the poison its the same as the other reaper. The poisoned reaper shows up on level 6 until the end of the game.

SPINNING SKULL - The spinny skull twirls around and gets in your way causing you to get injured, killed, and slow you down. It is industructible so all you can do is just avoid it.

NINJA - The ninja appears on level 7. It comes out of the ground and throws ninja stars at you. You can't kill it the first time it comes out of the ground because it will go back in the ground and reappear somewhere else close by. The ninja can do some damage to you and its best to concentrate on him even when you have other enemies to contend with. The ninja stars he throws get bigger and come at you in 2 different angles making them a bit tricky to dodge. But after you kill him the ninja leaves behind 1000 zenny coins.

BOSSES

BLOCK HEADS These are the level one and two bosses. The boss with the red eyes is a little bit stronger than the one with the blue eyes. They are easy to beat but you still have to be careful because they jump around a lot. You can still hit them when you don't see them on screen. On level one you have to face 2 of them. On level two you will have to face 4 of them but only one has red eyes. Then they appear throughout the rest of the game on each level. Hint - if you kill the blockhead with the red eyes first the rest of them will also die.

BLUE DRAGON - This is the first of the three dragons you have to kill. It is the weakest of the three dragons with only 3 vitality bars. If you attack it while its sleeping and not get too close, when it wakes up it should lose one vitality bar right away. Then just dodge the fire and if it flies high when you get near the wall run under it and attack on the other side or it will corner you. If you have a powerful weapon at this point (the most powerful you can get is the level 3 weapon) you can kill it quickly.

SPEAR THROWING DEMON - This is the level 4 boss. He can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing. He throws poisonous spears at you that at a certain distance explode into a blue flame which burns for a few seconds. He also flys quickly so you have to be fast to kill him. One hint, like the dragon, when he is in his cocoon formation you can shoot him and when he wakes up he will almost right away lose a vitality bar. If you have the fireball weapon at this time you can kill him easily.

BLUE SAMURAI DRAGON - This is a standing dragon which is easy to defeat. Just keep jumping up and down and aiming for the head. Make sure you are just in front of the dragon so he will keep casting fire spells and won't move. If he does move just move back and continue the same pattern.

GOLD DRAGON - This dragon appears on level 6 and is the same as the previous dragon except he is twice as strong. The same pattern can be used to kill this dragon and by this time you should have the fireball weapon and have enough money for the best armor.

GOLD SAMURAI DRAGON - This is the second standing dragon which is easy to defeat. Basically he is the same as the level 5 dragon except that he will take a bit longer to kill and he casts poison blue flames. When you kill him he is worth the most 150,000 points. I don't know why they made him worth so much, the last dragon is much harder to kill.

BLACK DRAGON - This dragon appears on level 8 and is the strongest of all the dragons. He is like the level 6 dragon but it takes longer to kill him. By this point you better have the fireball weapon and you should have full armor because no matter how good you are at the game, the dragon is too big to jump over and you will lose armor if you touch him. The only time you can get by the dragon is when he loses a vitality bar or flies under you or high enough over you. Strangely enough, when you beat this dragon you only get 10,000 points. However, in the Black Dragon version of the game it is worth 1,000,000 points.

ITEMS

ARMOR CLASS 1 - This is the standard armor you begin with in the game. It has 2 hit points before you lose the armor and then depending on your vitality will determine how many hits you can take without armor. The armor costs 80 zenny coins to be replaced. It costs 150 on normal level. 400 on difficult.

ARMOR CLASS 2 - This armor costs 300 zenny coins to buy and is worth 4 hit points before you lose it. It costs 500 on normal level. 1200 on difficult.
ARMOR CLASS 3 - This armor costs 800 zenny coins to buy and is worth 6 hit points. It costs 1200 on normal level. 2400 on difficult.

ARMOR CLASS 4 - This armor costs 1600 zenny coins to buy and is worth 8 hit points on easy level. It increases to 2400 zenny for normal. And 4800 for difficult.

URN - This holds many different items. It can be found almost everywhere in the game. It usually holds zenny coins or keys but sometimes they have enemies hiding in them or have nothing at all.

TREASURE CHEST - The treasure chest can also be found throughout the game. It also holds a variety of items and traps. You can usually tell if its a trap because you will hear a sound that indicates that flames are about to appear. Otherwise it can hold treasure which amounts to 50 zenny coins and also vitality potions.

SANDBAG - This item is usually hidden and can be found 3 times during the game. When you get this it adds an extra 30 seconds to the timer.

LIFE BONUS - Adds bonus life to character. This was previously thought to occur only once during the game but now it is known that it occurs at least 2 times during the game.

ELEPHANT - The Elephant is worth 500 zenny coins.

COW - The cow is worth 1000 zenny coins.

OCTOPUS - The octopus is worth 70,000 points in the game and is very valuable if you are going for a high score. In Black Dragon it is worth 100,000 points and can be found 2 times in the game.

STAR - The Star gives you 3 additional armor

STRAWBERRY - The Strawberry gives you additional armor

BARREL - The Barrel gives you 2 additional armor

HOURGLASS - This gives you an additional 30 seconds on the clock

POTION OF VITALITY - This will replenish your vitality

KEY - Used to open treasure chests

MAME DIP SWITCHES FOR BLACK TIGER
I was very pleased that with MAME you are able to change the dip switches for the video game. You can increase the difficulty level for the game which will also increase the amount of zenny coins you will need to purchase equipment. You can also increase your lives to 7, not that its necessary since you have unlimited credits. However if you are going for a high score you can use these extra lives to stay in a dungeon and kill skeletons until your time runs out.
You can also go into the general options menu and it tells you that you can save a game by pressing shift and F7 at the same time. It will ask you for a location and you can pick any key on the keyboard. However I noticed a glitch with the save game. If you go to kill a boss and saved your game before it, if the boss kills you and you go back to your saved game, there will be a barrier in front of the boss's lair. I did this when I was trying for a high score. I had 900,000 points before killing the final dragon. Unfortunately I could not continue because of the glitch. However in order to have a true high score for me, I would have to clear the game without saving and without increasing my lives to 7 in the beginning. But as anyone knows who has played this, some of the jumps are so wide that if you are a little bit off you will die.

BLACK TIGER NINTENDO VERSION

I always wondered about the Nintendo Version of this game. Obviously it wasn't a figment of my imagination as you can see from the picture here. I know when I was younger I had a magazine that had a picture of the Nintendo Version of Black Tiger. From what I remember it talked about the game and I was under the impression it was being sold. I would have bought it right away but I could never find it. Thanks to the internet I have now found out why. The game never got released in the U.S. and I'm not sure if it was released in Japan. I wish I knew this back then because I was searching for it. I always wanted to try the Nintendo version but I have a feeling I never will get a chance. I know there is currently no ROM for it but maybe it will surface some day.

		ARMOR CLASS 1 - This is the standard armor you begin with in the game. 		ARMOR CLASS 2 - This armor costs 300 zenny coins to buy and is worth 4 hit points before you lose it. It costs 500 on normal level. 1200 on difficult.
		ARMOR CLASS 3 - This armor costs 800 zenny coins to buy and is worth 6 hit points. It costs 1200 on normal level. 2400 on difficult.
		ARMOR CLASS 4 - This armor costs 1600 zenny coins to buy and is worth 8 hit points on easy level. It increases to 2400 zenny for normal. And 4800 for difficult.
		URN - This holds many different items. It can be found almost everywhere in the game. It usually holds zenny coins or keys but sometimes they have enemies hiding in them or have nothing at all.
		TREASURE CHEST - The treasure chest can also be found throughout the game. It also holds a variety of items and traps. You can usually tell if its a trap because you will hear a sound that indicates that flames are about to appear. Otherwise it can hold treasure which amounts to 50 zenny coins and also vitality potions.

		SANDBAG - This item is usually hidden and can be found 3 times during the game. When you get this it adds an extra 30 seconds to the timer.
		LIFE BONUS - Adds bonus life to character. This was previously thought to occur only once during the game but now it is known that it occurs at least 2 times during the game.
		ELEPHANT - The Elephant is worth 500 zenny coins.
		COW - The cow is worth 1000 zenny coins.
		OCTOPUS - The octopus is worth 70,000 points in the game and is very valuable if you are going for a high score. In Black Dragon it is worth 100,000 points and can be found 2 times in the game.
		STAR - The Star gives you 3 additional armor
		STRAWBERRY - The Strawberry gives you additional armor
		BARREL - The Barrel gives you 2 additional armor
		HOURGLASS - This gives you an additional 30 seconds on the clock
		POTION OF VITALITY - This will replenish your vitality
		KEY - Used to open treasure chests
