Later that evening, while at the dinner table, the cellar door located in the living room pops open and the small group rushes in to see what has happened. Ash and Scotty head down into the cellar and discover a book, the Necronomicon, or the Book of the Dead. Accompanying this book is an old tape recorder filled with evil passages. The book found in the cellar resembles the book Cheryl had unwillingly sketched earlier.

Shortly after dinner, while sitting around the fireplace, Ash decides to play the recording found in the cellar. Little does anyone know, this unleashes a dark evil in the woods. A tree crashing through the front window breaks up the scene and everyone heads off to bed. Ellen, while brushing her hair in her room, starts to hear voices. She stupidly follows the voice into the woods and gets raped by the trees, possessing her. After she returns to the cabin, the mayhem begins.
