Entering the U.S. Air Force in 1991 from the Troy State University ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps), Boutwell now 33, lives in Greenvile, Ala. and is married to Leslie Fuller. The two have one daughter, Brooke. During operation Southern Watch, Boutwell was deployed to the Middle east where he flew 39 combat missions enforcing the no-fly zone over Southern Iraq.
