The USAF Thunderbirds are and have been the official air demonstration squadron for the United States Air Force for over 47 years. Currently showcasing their aeronautical skills in the F-16C Fighting Falcon, only 230 pilots in the Air Force's history have donned the Thunderbirds squadron patch. BI-yearly, twelve officers are selected after progressing through a rigorous testing program which involves actual flight maneuvers in a two seat variant of the F-16C (the F-16D). Six of these officers fly the demonstration jets, while two more fly the planes that serve as backups for the other six. Officers number 9-12 serve the roles of flight surgeon, executive, maintenance and public affairs duties respectively. |
