Page 4 It has been about 75 days now, (12/13/02) I hoped to spend the thanksgiving holidays making serious headway, but was stalled by an unforseen parts shortage! The Wife was happy tho! Now, its just 12 days till xmas and I have the wings and empennage complete, and the boom tube back on the cage. I started to layout an aileron today! This isnt gonna take long!
Here below is how you use a hole-finder, a very handy gadget for getting holes aligned, and VERY useful in this Kolb project because of all the round tubing! This is an aileron rib, and the bottom tube in the pic has been drilled with the V-block type drill guide. The Hole finder is the item I'm holding in my hand. The shorter bent rib tube need to be drilled just exactly aligned with the bottom tube for a rivet. Note the dimple on the bottom "arm" of the hole-finder.
You insert the small dimple on the holefinder into the 1st hole, and the other "arm" of the hole finder has a drill bushing fixed to it that will guide your drill directly above the bottom pre-drilled hole with the target piece between!
In the pic below you see a couple of "T" blocks I made for to locate the Aileron hinges via the hinge pin, and also to hold the correct spacing between he trailing edge of the wing and the aileron.(.875). You need to cut an extra long length of hinge pin rod so you can insert it thru the hole in the "T" block, this way , all the hinges (3) will pivot at the EXACTLY same point, and the control surface will operate smoothly
Now, I have heard of several different methods to capture the hinge pins suggested, from cutting the pin long and bending it, to cutting it short and mashing (crimping) the end of the hinge. WHEW...no way! In General Aviation a more accepted method is simply drill the end of the hinge and run a safety wire thru the hole capturing the shortened pin, and allowing for disassembly for inspection without tearing up a hinge or re-bending the pin.
after the Ailerons, I will attach all the assemblies to the fuselage and get to riggin' Stay tuned!
