Plants more or less loosely attached to the substrate, usually by rhizines; with a lower cortex. Lacking an upright axis that is round in cross-section and with upright leaf-like lobes. Colour can vary from pale grey, yellowish green, dark green, light brown, dark brown, orange, red to almost black, depending on species. |

| This group is sometimes treated separately from the rest of the fruticose lichens because they are so distinct. These plants have upright axes that are more or less round in cross-section. Leaf-like lobes are often present at the base of the podetia. They are commonly found growing on the ground, on soil, rotting wood and amongst mosses. |
