| Act 1-Scene 1 1. In this scene, Parris confronts Abigail to find out what happened in the forest. Betty had fainted because of what they were doing and she got freaked out. Parris wanted Abigail to confess that they were dancing in the trees and why there was a dress on the grass and a naked girl dancing around. Abigail confesses that they were dancing in the forest to Tituba singing barbados but she denies that anyone was dancing naked. And Mrs. Putnam comes over to find out whats wrong with Betty and she tries to fly. 6. I think that relationship between Parris and Abigail is that Parris doesn't trust her very much, because he says "Abigail, I cannot go before the congregation when I know you have not opened with me. What did you do with her in the forest?" This basiclly means that he doesn't trust her because he already ask her and he is asking again because he still doesn't believe her. 7. If I was Reverend Parris in this scene I would be wondering if I really saw a naked girl dancing in the trees or was it just my imagination and is Abigail really telling the truth. I would think that Abigail was lying because was perfectly sane and I know what I saw. Act 1-Scene 2 1. Abigail and Mercy talk. Abigail tries to get Betty to move and talk, but Betty remains still and mute. Mary Warren enters and talks with the girls over what they should do. They're worried that they are going to get into trouble with the town. Betty whimpers and Abigail goes over to her. Betty gets hysterical and she says that Abigail drank blood to kill Goody Proctor. Abby tells Betty to shut up and Abby threatens the girls. She says that if they open their mouths and tell about what they did last night, then she will make something awful happen to them: "'I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you . . .. I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!'" 3. Betty - Why did you freak out just because you saw the girls drinking chicken blood, its gross, but why would you get all hysterical like you did? Abigail - Why don't you just not dance in the forest and drink blood if you don't want anyone to know about it? 5. Betty seems to be a little weird, just because she saw them doing that stuff in the forest she goes ballistic over nothing. I think she should chill and not even care what they were doing because it wasn't that big of a deal. Act 1-Scene 3 2. This scene is really significant because Abigail admits her love for John Proctor. Without this scene the play would be a lot different because Abigail wouldn't be in the forest drinking the chicken's blood to try and kill John's wife, Elizabeth. Then the whole commotion about the withcraft wouldn't even had started. 4. Proctor - "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby." I liked this quote because it says that John doesn't want anything to do with Abby and he wants her to forget about him and never think about him in that way again. 7. If I was Abigail in this scene, admitting that I love John and if I loved him as much as she says she does then I would do all I can to get him to love me back. I would feel really sad and heartbroken because the one I loved doesn't love my back. Act 1-Scene 4 3. The all them - Why do you guys think that the devil is coming over the town, just because Rebecca walks over to Betty and she quiets down. 4. Mrs. Putnam - "The psalm! The psalm! She cannot bear to hear the Lord's name!" I thought that this quote was interesting because they thought that she couldn't hear the name fo the lord because she happened to start freaking out right when Abigail said it. 5. I thought it was strang that Betty started freaking out when she heard the lord's name, or was it just a coincidence. I wasn't sure if it was really because she heard the lord's name or not. Act 1-Scene 5 2. This scene is significant to the play because you find out the first person who was accussed of being a witch. Without this scene you wouldn't know who accussed who of bieng a witch. Abigail accussed Tituba of doing witchcraft and making here dance and drink blood in the forest. 6. The relationship between Abiagail and Tituba seems to be good but then Abigail says Tituba is the one who practices wtichcraft. So then it seems like Abigail doesn't like Tituba very much because why would you accuse someone and basically send her to her death if she accually liked her. 7. If I was Abigail in thie scene, I wouldn't say what she said. I thought that it was wrong that she accussed Tituba of making her drink the chicken's blood when she was the one who wanted to do it to kill Elizabeth. I would of told the truth because that was the right thing to do and wrong to wrongly accuse someone of doing something they didn't do. Act 2-Scene 1 4. Proctor - "You will not judge me more, Elizabeth. I have good reason to think before I charge fraud on Abigail, and I will think on it. Let you look to your own improvement before you go to judge your husband anymore. I have forgot Abigail" I like this qoute because John tell Elizabeth to stop judging him and to trust him and Elizabeth agrees to not judge him no more. 5. I thought that it was good for John that he told Elizabeth that she could trust him and to stop judging him from what he did in the past. I think that John should of told Elizabeth to shut up and stop caring about Abigail does. 6. Elizabeth seems not to trust her husband very much because why else would she being arguing about the affair that John had with Abigail. Act 2-Scene 2 1. Mary Warren enters. John questions her as to why she has been to Salem, when he told her not to go. Mary feels bad but says she is an official of the court and has to go to help determine who are witches and who are not. She tells Elizabeth and John that thirty-nine women have now been arrested and Goody Osburn will hang. Apparently, Goody Osburn cast a spell on Mary Warren and when questioned about it by Judge Hathorne, Goody Osburn said that she was only reciting her commandments. However, she did not know even a single commandment when asked to recite one of them. Mary sobs and also tells them that Goody Good, who is a much older woman, is pregnant. Proctor forbids Mary to go to the court again, but she insists, since she is an official. He goes to whip her, and she screams that she saved Elizabeth's life today. Everyone falls silent, and Elizabeth asks who accused her. Mary cannot tell. Mary demands that John treats her with respect and she exits the stage. Elizabeth claims that Abby wants her dead, and that is why Abby gave her name in court. She thinks Abby wants to take her place as the wife of John Proctor. Elizabeth pleads with John to go and see Abby and deny any promise that he may have made to her, so Abby will know that she has no chance of becoming John's wife. John says reluctantly that he will go and speak with Abby, but he is angry that his wife will not drop this mistake that he made by having an affair with Abby. "'I'll plead no more! I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free!'" 2. This scene is important because it is when Mary says that someone accussed her of being a witch and Mary saved her life that day. Without this scene you wouldn't know that Elizabeth thinks that it is Abby that wants her died and she turned her name in to the court because she wants to become John Proctor's wife. 3. Proctor - Why do you not want Mary to go to Salem even if she is an official in the court? Mary Warren - Why don't you tell Elizabeth who wants her died? Elizabeth - Why do you think that it is Abigail that wants you dead? Act 2-Scene 3 3. Proctor - Why do you not like Reverend Parris so much? Elizabeth - Why do you get so defensive about your christian ways? 4. Hale - "I have seen too many frightful proofs in court - the Devil is alive in Salem, and we dare not quail to follow wherever the accusing finger points!" I like this quote because it was funny and I thought that it was crazy that he accually thinks that the devil is upon the town. 5. I thought that it was wired that Hale would question Elizabeth like he did because she is such a good christian girl. It was strange that Hale acted like a police officer or something when talking to John and Elizabeth. Act 2-Scene 4 1. Ezekiel Cheever and Marshal Herrick enter. They say that they have come with a warrant to arrest Elizabeth, as she is accused of being a witch by Abigail Williams. Abby said that Elizabeth had poppets (dolls) in her house. Elizabeth denies this, but as she does, Cheever sees a poppet on the mantel. Elizabeth swears that the poppet is Mary's. The men think that Elizabeth used a poppet to bewitch Abigail. Proctor is outraged that anyone could think his wife would do such a thing, and he tries to convince them that Abigail planned all of this on her own (to make it look as if Elizabeth did something). Mary Warren enters and claims the poppet as her own, but Cheever and Hale still want to take Elizabeth with them. Proctor grabs the warrant and tears it, as he is completely disgusted with the whole situation. He cannot believe that Cheever and Hale are going along with a law and an authority that are based on childish schemes: Elizabeth agrees to go with Cheever and Herrick. She makes John promise that he will bring her home soon. Cheever and Herrick leave with Elizabeth. Giles and Francis ask John what they should do. John tells them he will think about it and Giles and Francis leave. John tells Mary that she is coming to court with him so that she can say that Abby is a fraud. Mary refuses and says that she cannot do it. She also tells John that Abby will charge lechery on him. John is stunned that everyone knows now about his and Abby's affair. He figures that he has nothing left to lose. He grabs Mary and demands that she go with him to the court. He yells and Mary sobs as the scene ends. 4. Proctor - "I'll tell you what's walking Salem - vengeance is walking Salem. We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! This warrant's vengeance! I'll not give my wife to vengeance!" I like this quote because John is sticking up for his wife and tries not to let Cheever and Herrick take her. 6. It seems that John really loves his wife because he dosen't want Cheever and Herrick to take Elizabeth and tries to stand in their way. The relationship between them seems to be loving. Proctor - "I will bring you home. I will bring you soon." Act 3-Scene 1 2. I think that this scene is significant because lots of stuff happen in it. John tries to get Mary to confess they were making it all up, which she admits, Danforth tells John that Elizabeth is pregnant, and Proctor gives Danforth a piece of paper with a list of signatures on it, the names are the names of people who testify that Elizabeth, Martha, and Rebecca are not witches. Without this scene you wouldn't know all this stuff. 5. I thought that it was wierd that Parris and Danforth didn't believe when Mary confessed that it all was a joke and none of it was true when she said it was. It also is kind of seems that everyone is agianst other. 7. I feel sorry for Proctor because he finds out that Elizabeth is pregnant and he has a decision to make about how long she will stay in jail and I think that would be really hard to do. Proctor is going through a lot of stuff and if I were he I wouldn't even care anymore because there really isn't anything left for him to lose. Act 3-Scene 2 1. Proctor gives Danforth Giles' deposition. Thomas Putnam enters. Giles says that Putnam had his daughter accuse George Jacobs of witchcraft so that Putnam could buy off Jacobs' land when he hangs. Putnam denies this. Danforth wants to know who told Giles this information. Giles refuses to give the name because he knows that that person will get into trouble with the court if he mentions their name. Danforth calls this contempt of court. Hale tries to explain that people are afraid of the court because of its actions to throw everyone in jail so easily. Danforth responds that there is a plot to overthrow Christ (and at the same time, the court) in the country. Giles lunges for Putnam as to attack him. Danforth arrests Giles for contempt. Proctor gives Danforth Mary Warren's deposition. He claims that she was lying about the witchcraft before. Hale pleads with Danforth to allow Proctor to leave and come back with a lawyer, someone who could argue the case professionally. Danforth denies this request. He reads the deposition and calls in Susanna, Betty, Abigail, and Mercy. He tells them that just as witchcraft is a crime, so too is lying. He questions Abigail first, and Abby says that Mary is lying. Abby maintains that what she originally said is still true. Mary claims that when she fainted in the court before that she was only pretending. Parris, Hathorne, and Danforth ask her to pretend to faint now, but she says she cannot. They say that she cannot because there are no spirits around and that she must be lying about pretending before. Danforth questions Abby once again and the girls all claim that they are freezing, and that Mary is sending out her spirit onto them. Mary pleads with them to not do this to her, and to not accuse her of such things. 3. Abigail - Why don't you tell the truth already and stop the lies? Danforth - Can't you just give it up and forget about it? Danforth - Why are you such a freak about the witches in the town? 7. I don't know what the heck Abigail could possibly be thinking when she tells all these lies and how her consence lets her do this and she doesn't feel bad for it at all. Act 3-Scene 3 2. This scene is crazy, especially when Abigail and the girls see the yellow bird and start mimicing everyword that Abby is saying. Without this scene everyone else like, Danforth, Hale, Parris and a few others wouldn't find out about the affiar he had with Abigail and how Abby wants revenge. 4. Proctor - "God is dead!" Its not that I like this quote but I thought that it was interesting because John says God is dead just because he is being accussed of of being the devil and that he goes to Mary every night and tries to get her to sign her name in the devil's book. 6. Proctor doesn't seem to like God very much anymore and really seems to be pulling away from the church, he also doesn't seem to like Danforth at all. Proctor - "A fire, a fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face, and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud - God damns our kind especially, and we will burn, we will burn together!" Act 4-Scene 1 1. The scene opens inside a Salem jail cell that fall. Tituba and Sarah Good are in the cell discussing going to Barbados with the Devil. Marshal Herrick enters, half drunk, and takes Tituba away. She calls out that she is going home to Barbados with the Devil. 3. Tituba - Why do want to go unto Barbados with the Devil? Sarah Good - Why would you even let Tituba influence you to unto the Devil? 5. I was assonished that Tituba and Sarah would drink and even think about going with the Devil. Act 4-Scene 2 2. This scene is important because it talks about how, Abby ran off with 31 pounds of Parris's money, how John is going to be hung if he doesn't confess and how Danforth won't postpone the hangings. 6. Danforth must not have a very good relationship with the people standing on trail because he wants them to die and not a day later then when it is scheduled. Danforth - "There will be no postponement" 7. If I was Parris in this scene I would be pissed that Abigail stole 31 pounds of money from me and left on a ship. I would also be mad because I fear for my life and Danforth doesn't even postpone the executions for a little while until I felt safe. Act 4-Scene 3 1. Proctor enters, and everyone else but Elizabeth leaves. He is worn out, dirty, and has grown much facial hair. He asks about the child and their other children. She informs him that many have already confessed and that Giles is dead. John asks Elizabeth what she thinks he should do, confess or not. She says that she wants him to do what he wants to do, but that she also wants him alive. He says that spite keeps him silent. He does not want to lie and confess to being a witch when he knows that he is innocent. She tells him that she knows whatever choice he makes, he is still a good man. She also says that it takes a cold wife for a husband to have an affair. John cannot bear to hear her speak badly about herself. 3. Proctor - Why don't you just make up your mind, yourself and stop caring if your innocent or not, just to keep you alive is good enough for your family, no matter the cost? Elizabeth - Why don't you tell him that you really wish that he would just confess whether or not its true so that you won't be alone? 5. I thought that it was dumb that Elizabeth didn't tell him that she really wants him to confess. I also thought it was stupid how she starts talking about she is a cold wife for her husband to have an affair at this moment; why would you bring something like that up when your husband might die. Act 4-Scene 4 2. This scene is significant because it is where John Proctor confessess to having relaions with the devil but then he refuses to give the paper he signed back because it had his name on it and he didn't want his children to see it. Without this scene the play would be much different because you wouldn't know that John accually confesses but then changes his mind. 4. Proctor - "I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but white enough to keep it from such dogs. Give them no tear! Tears pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!" I like this quote because John is telling Elizabeth to be strong and not to cry in front of them because they like it. 6. Between John and Elizabeth, it seems that Elizabeth is really sad because she wanted him to confess and it was so close but he changed his mind and she got really sad because she will have to raise the children by herself. |
