In 1940 Miller married Mary Slattery, whom already had two children. Soon after he wrote his first play to appear on Broadway called The Man Who Had all the Luck. He continued to work on plays but in 1945 he wrote his first novel entitled, Focus. In 1949 Miller gained international success when he wrote Death of a Salesman. Several years later he wrote The Crucible, which became his most produced play. In 1956 he married Marilyn Monroe, but divorced in 1961. After a 9 year absence from writing, he returned with the play, After the Fall. Many people consider this play to be autobiographical with a central character modeled after Monroe. In 1962, Miller married to an Austrian photographer named Inge Morath; she helped with books about Russia and China. In the 1900's Miller wrote plays The Ride Down Mount Morgan and The Last Yankee. But in a recent interview he acknowledged the decrease in good plays and was disappointed that its getting harder to find mature actors. In 2002, Miller was honored with the Principle de Asturias prize for literature, making him the first American to win this prize.
