Marvin Gaye Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye is perhaps the greatest singer in the history of America. His love ballads of the 50's and 60's turned to protest songs in the 70's as Marvin changed with the times. Marvin always spoke his mind and that at times seemed to get him in trouble. Barry Gordy, President of Motown Records, was against Marvin doing a protest album. He could not change Marvin and the album What's Going On was released. It became his most popular album.

What's Going On is an album full of faith and despair. The anger of the times can be felt through the lyrics. Marvin was heavily influenced by his brother, Frankie, who was in Vietnam and told Marvin horrific tales of the war. This album prclaimed Marvin as a serious artist. The album was radical for 1971. Three top-ten hits came off of the album.

Marvin's most popular song is probably the song Sexual Healing off of the 1983 sexually charged album Midnight Love. Sexual Healing won a Grammy for Marvin in 1983. His first Grammy of his life. It came after 26 albums and 40 hits. Marvin's life was a full time roller coaster that came to a screeching halt when his father shot him twice in the heart, after a heated arguement about how Marvin's father was treating his mother.
