Daddy Cha-Cha is an innovative music duo consisting of musicians Shawn Dunn and Kathy Dunn. They perform all of their music on steel drums, or "pans". They formed the group in the summer of 2000 and played for over a year in the Huntington, WV - Ashland, KY area. In the summer of 2001 they brought the fun north, and are playing out of the Morgantown-Fairmont-Clarksburg, WV area. Their instrumental selections are guaranteed to bring a smile to everyone, and their song list ranges from island music to pop, and everything from soothing melodies to raucous socas that will get you in a dancing mood! Shawn and Kathy have many years of playing experience on the pans. Shawn started one the first high school steel drum bands in Ohio, South Point Steel, at South Point High School in 1996. He has worked with Ellie Mannette, a Trinidad native known as the "father of the steel drum", and performed with such well-known steel drum artists as Tom Miller, Jeff Narell, Ray Holman, and Ken "Professor" Philmore. Shawn is currently the band director at Fairmont Senior High School. Kathy also has a degree in music and teaches privately. Daddy Cha-Cha performs using two sets of pans: a lead pan and a set of double seconds. They also use midi background tracks run through an amplifier system. All background tracks are custom arranged and provide the backing of bass, drums, etc. With the steel pans being acoustic instruments, and the addition of amplified backing tracks, the group is able to play softly enough to be comfortable in a smaller room, or they can turn up the volume to fill a much larger or noisier environment. They are able to perform indoors or outdoors, for practically any type of occasion.
Daddy Cha-Cha performs on pans built by Merlin Gill, and they come directly from Trinidad, the birthplace of pan. Click Here to visit the webpage for Gill's Steelpan Shop.
