My Boiler

under construction

One day I got bored, so I decided to build a boiler. I took two pieces of 1/8 inch steel and some pieces of purling (that C shaped stuff). I welded the two purlings together for the sides. Then I cut holes in the plate so that I could have some pipes running through it vertically. This would allow the smoke through and added more surface area for heat transfer. Then I welded one plate to the purlings and the other plate, I welded the pipe on (EMT) then I welded this piece of plate to the purlings and welded the other end of the pipes to the other plate. This made a neet little metal box. then I drilled two holes for piping. One on the the side I brazed on a piece of 1/2 inch copper pipe with a garden hose adapter, this is where the water enters. The second hole is on the top and it has 1/4 inch pipe for the steam coming out. In this hole I attached two valves. I also attached a presure guage.

After testing it out, I descided it needed a base. I finnaly talked my dad out of two flanges that were laying around and welded them to the side of the boiler for legs and added a piece of plate between the two on the back , so it makes a firebox. A couple weeks later, I picked up some scrap pieces of metal at my Dad's work and built a base for the boiler. this was a metal box with no bottom, and a pice of stainless grate on the top, the side had vents cut into it to allow air under the fire.

The guage on the top stops at 100 psi and I have pinned it once. Since the welds are not all that great, I usually try to keep it under about 80 psi.
