| The cause of the war is not as simple as politically correct historians would have you believe. It was not simply an issue of slavery. Only 1 out of 4 citizens of the southern states owned slaves. The Rebublicans controlled congress, and they were staunch industrialists. Big business owned them. When Lincoln was elected the hope of equal representation for the South was gone. Lincoln was determined to force his version of federalism on the southern states and creat a business climate prefered by the north. Hence the tarrif system that caused the South to pay 87% of the tarrifs collected in 1860. Abraham Lincoln refused to meet with Southern representatives in an attempt to reach a compromise before the war. This was against the advice of his own cabinet. Robert E. Lee is one of the greatest Americans this country has ever known. I urge you to read the links below. Read for yourself how Lee himself opposed slavery but thought it necessary to defend his state and home against yankee federalism. My GreatGreatgrandpa joined Adams Arkansas Infantry early in the War of Northern Agression. He was dirt poor and owned no slaves. His motivation must have been to preserve states rights over federal rights. This is important to those that understand the difference. He was captured by the yankees and sent to Jefferson Barracks Military Prison. He remained there till he died on March 25, 1863. He was captured a few weeks before the battle at Pea Ridge. I am looking for a small skirmish or something that coincides with his date of capture (10 Dec. 1861 in Carter Co., Mo. ) in an effort to figure out the circumstances surrounding his capture. |

| My Uncle Hilton told me that he remembers his grandpa talking about this. He told me that Levi wrote home and said that he would be released soon, but he was sick at the time and would be home after he got better. Then, he just never came home and they never heard anything more about him. Records I have found seem to agree with this statement. Records show he was discharged from the POW camp on 25 Feb., 1863 and died and was buried on 25 Mar., 1863. He was 26 when he died. He left his wife and two sons. Burl S. Bell(my great grandpa) born in 1856 and James M. Bell born in 1857. His wife Nancy Ann Busby Bell later remarried. | |||||||||||||||||||
