A Brief Breakdown of Kuati Social Rank

When the average person comes into the Kuat sector, they're normally stunned by how 'backward' the socio-political structure of the sector operates, as compared to the rest of the Republic. What with it's high-tech manufacturing center in the Kuat Drive Yards and other 'modern' accutriments, one would expect that a democracy of some form would have taken root. One hasn't directly done so, but the individual planets have duly-elected Senators that represent them in the Galactic Sentate.
The following list breaks down the Social structure, and the political landscape will be documented later.
- House Kuat - The ruling House in the Sector has always been House Kuat, and they are the de-facto "kings" of the sector, if that weren't forbidden by the Republic Charter.
- Major Houses - These houses are the most powerful houses in the Sector (behind House Kuat, of course), and are mostly responsible for Planetary Administration
- Diuc - Diucal Houses are those that have proven themselves in combat (dating to before the Republic), or extremely worthy to House Kuat. These Houses also command, field, outfit and pay for their own Corps-sized unit in the Kuati Defense Force. Female Diucal-bearers or Female Consorts are styled Diuca.
- Maljarl - Maljarl Houses are ones that control planets on the outer-reaches of the Sector. Before the Republic, these Houses were the first line of defense against invaders, and ranked slightly above the Jarls because of the increased defensive duty they performed. Maljarls command and recruit their own Corps-sized unit in the Defense Force, but do not equip them. Female Maljarl-bearers or Female Consorts are styled Maliarla
- Jarl - Jarl Houses are the lowest-ranking of the Major Houses, and they control individual planets. While they still command immense power, and are commanded to keep the peace (as are all Major Houses), Jarls are considered to be the 'lowest of the high'. Jarls command and recruit their own Corps-sized units like the Maljarls. Female Jarls or Female Consorts are styled Iarla. House Brillard controls the Jarldom of Gyndine, and have been there since their personal service to House Kuat elevated them from merely controlling the North Continent under House Maygar.
- Minor Houses - These houses are the 'second-string' of nobility in the Sector, and are mostly responsible for Reigonal Administration, such as Continental Administration under a Major House, or controlling an inhabitable moon or mining interests for a Major House.
- Biocun - Bicounal Houses provide ease of administration for the Major Houses, but can still play the game of politics to be granted a larger fief either under their Major House, or be granted Major-status by House Kuat. The power of alliances between Major and Minor houses is what makes the Kuat Sector interesting. Bicouns command Divisions within the KDF, under the auspices of their allied House.
- Barun - Barunial Houses are slightly smaller than Bicounal Houses, and like their larger cousins, play the game to increase their holdings and stature within the Assembly, trying to ascend to the next-higher status. Especially tenacious Baruns are known by their subjects as "Con Baruns", in reference to their steep rates of taxation. Baruns command a Brigade within the KDF, under the auspices of their allied House.
- Military Gentry - These pseudo-houses are the 'third-string' of nobility in the Sector, and are technically not Houses in that sense. Allied with other houses, they serve as administrators inside the House's bureaucracy. Also, heirs of Major Houses are allowed to take a title of a Military Gentle-level to indicate their status as noble, but they add "Heir of House X" to their title to show that they are, in reality, of a Major House. Finally, all Military Gentry posess a manor-house as part of their Feif, as a way of proving their worth to the House they serve.
- Ruire - These gentry are the Lords of their own domain, but not allowed to enforce the laws of the House they serve under. Ruire command a Regiment within the KDF, under the auspices of their allied House. Laslo Brillard, Heir to House Brillard is styled as Ruire, but being an heir, he did not command the obligatory Regiment.
- Tiarna - These gentry were awarded command of a larger group within the military (previous the Sector Armed Forces, but now the KDF) for performance in battle, or as a gift for service to either their allied house or House Kuat. A Tiarna will command a Battalion within the KDF, under the auspices of their allied House.
- Lesser Gentry - These Gentry are the 'fourth-string' of nobility, and are just a step above high-ranking members of society. Gentry in this station have been granted lands by a House for service, but more often than not, in this day and age, they simply purchased the noble title from a House willing to sell titles for large sums of money. Heirs of Military Gentry can style themselves as Lesser Gentry as Houses do with Military Gentry.
- Taoiseach - These nobles have lands which they adminstrate as they see fit, but there is no set way that they go about this. More often than not, Taoiseach are created by House Kuat for service to the sector or to the House. If Taoiseach so desire, they can command a Company in the KDF under the auspices of their sponsoring House. Dukayne Sol bears the title "Taoiseach" because of his assistance to House Kuat's shipyards, and also for being an outstanding economic benefit to the whole sector
- Esquire - Esquires are nobles who have been given a token parcel of land in return for service to a House or the Sector. The title is not hereditary, so it cannot be passed on to heirs. If Esquire so desire, they are allowed to command their own Platoon in the KDF, under the auspices of their sponsoring House.
