Materia is the magic orbs that gives the characters magic attacks. Very similar to the Magicites in Final Fantasy III. The more you use the orbs, the more powerful they become. After a materia orb has been mastered (achieved as many AP's as possible) then it will reproduce itself giving you another materia orb of its kind. This way, you won't have to buy nine of the same orb, simply fight and fight until you've mastered and reproduced one.
Also, each weapon has a 'growth factor' on it. It can be as many a three times normal growth or no growth at all. Try to equip materia orbs on weapons with a high growth rate. All of the ultimate weapons have no growth so don't expect an orb to grow from it.
