As its full name implies to some, the ZEUS cannon is an advanced version of earlier particle projection weapons. Electrns and stray ions are drawn tightly together in a strong electromagnetic nuclear field. A path for the conglomerate (once it is fully charged) is formed via an ion beam which cuts thru the established field. The ion beam is a directional device and its nature tends to make it stray towards magnetic objects, such as ionized armor, metallic surfaces, or deep gravity wells. Once the ion beam connects with any object, and aqcuistion is attained. Upon this, the particles are unleashed in a stream along the ion trail. Natural stabilization of the highly volatile particles results in portions of the charged conglomerate being left behind as travels, leaving a long tail of stray ions and strong electrical fileds of various types. In effect, the weapon will create a long thin beam of particle and ion power slamming into a target, making not only the target in danger but also anything that happens to be in between the ZEUS cannon and the unfortunate victim. A strength of this weapon is two fold: unparalleled destructive power, and due to its specific nature it is also the only weapon system capable of penetrating a PRISM shield. However, a weakness of the ZEUS cannon is its large power requirement, making this device practical only as an orbital platform or capital ship mount. |
