ESSAY QUESTION ANSWER... "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" In the middle ages, the Catholic church controlled virtually every aspect of life. Thus it played a vital role in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." Issues raised are; adultery and Gawain's masculinity. The people of this day held religion in high esteem. The abundant references to religion emphasized the theme as well. Each religious word was directed at the notation that a person's place in the world or community was predetermined. The only thoughts necessary were those of obedience to GOD, KING and COUNTRY. REligion meant so much to these people that many feel that through the series of tests imposed upon him that Gawain declines spiritually. |
