Lesson Plan for Third Grade Physical Education

“Grab a Partner!”

Objectives

Cognitive

-         The student will be able to identify at least two partner stunts.

-         The student will be able to describe the hand and leg positioning of each partner in a wheelbarrow stunt.

Psychomotor

-         The student will be able to perform three partner stunts with 100% accuracy.

-         The student will be able to complete a partner stunt relay race with 100% accuracy.

Affective

-         The student will be able to work cooperatively in groups of two or more when performing certain gymnastics moves.

-         The student will be able to recognize the importance of spotting partners during their gymnastics stunts.

Warm-up:  Time frame - 5 minutes

1.)    Begin with students jogging around the perimeter of the gym.

2.)    On whistle command, students will stop and perform a balance stunt (ex:  knee lift, free standing – grasp the toe, etc.) or stunt jump (ex:  bell, bent knee hop, etc.) that they previously have learned.

Knee Lift                Free Standing (Grasp the Toe)                 Bell                 Bent Knee Hop

3.)    Do 5-7 times.

Core of Lesson:  Time frame - 30 minutes

1.)  Bunk Bed

-  Begin with students pairing up with another student who has different color eyes than they do. (If students are left over, pair those remaining together)

-  One student will need to lie on their back with their legs slightly apart.

-  The other student will stand over their partner, straddling the partner’s waist with their legs and facing the same direction as their partner’s legs.

-  The standing partner will bend over and grab their partner’s ankles.

-  The partner lying down will grab their partner’s ankles one by one, holding their partner in the air while their partner balances on their ankles.

*Go step by step, indicating how each student should be positioned.

2.)  Wheelbarrow

            -  One student will get into a push-up position on the mat, legs spread apart.

-   The second student will face towards their partner from behind, standing in between their legs.

-   The standing student will grab one leg under their partner’s thigh, making sure their partner is balanced; once balanced, they will grab the other leg under their partner’s thigh, forming the wheelbarrow position.

-  The partner on the mat will now have to use their arms in order to “walk,” getting help from their partner who is leading them in a direction.

3.)  Head-to-Head

-  Each student will lay on their stomachs on the mat with their partners, facing head to head. (Make sure the tops of their heads are touching)

-  Each student will extend their arms upward into a V-position, holding hands with their partner.

-  While trying to keep their heads and hands together, students will have to roll over on to their backs, working together cooperatively.

-  After accomplished, students will have to roll back on to their stomachs, keeping heads and hands together.

4.)  Wheelbarrow Relay Race

-  Begin with students counting off by 4’s (since there are 24 students in the class, this will form 4 groups of 6).

-  Once the groups are assigned, have the children partner up within their groups.

-  The wheelbarrow race will use the short length of the mat (groups need to be spread apart on the mat in order for space).

-  The first group of partners within each group will begin when the whistle is blown.  They will wheelbarrow to the opposite end of the mat.  They will then switch positions so that each person gets a turn at the opposite position.  Once they have switched, they will wheelbarrow back to their group.  Once they come to the end of the mat, the next group of partners will begin.  This pattern continues until the last group of partners has crossed the finish line.  The first group who gets all partners across the finish line and is seated will be the winners.

*Review the correct positioning of wheelbarrows if the students do not remember.  (Refer to above picture for positioning.)

Cool-down:  Time frame - 5-8 minutes

1.)    Have students pick a partner and spread out on the mat.

2.)    Perform “Indian Leg Wrestle.”  Complete three times with this partner.

3.)    Switch partners and repeat.
