Sharks and Barracudas – Chasing and Tagging Activity
1. The students are assigned into two separate teams by dividing half of the assigned colors to one team and the other half to the other team. One team is the Sharks; the other team is the Barracudas.
2. Each group will go to the end line on each end of the gym. A group leader is picked by the teacher for each team.
3. The object of the game is for the group that is sneaking up on the other group, to try to get away without being tagged from the other group.
4. The game begins with the sharks sneaking up real slowly behind the barracudas, which have their backs to the sharks.
5. Once the barracudas’ leader feels the sharks are getting close enough to be caught, he or she yells out: Here come the Sharks!
6. The barracudas take off and try to catch as many sharks as possible within 15 seconds. Each shark that is tagged becomes a member of the Barracudas.
7. Now
it is the barracudas turn to sneak up on the sharks. Once the sharks’ leader feels that the
barracudas are close enough to be caught, he or she yells out: Here
come the Barracudas! The sharks take
off and try to catch as many barracudas as possible within 15 seconds. Each barracuda that is tagged becomes a
member of the Sharks.
VI. Task Development – (35-38 minutes)
1. Each student will be given a balloon to manipulate. The teacher will begin by reviewing last week’s skills that were taught, which include manipulating a balloon with their fingertips, head, elbow, knee, and feet. They also learned how to strike a balloon into the air and catch it with both hands.
2. The teacher will then assign partners by having the orange, green, and purple rows turn to their lefts and work with the student opposite them. Each group will need one balloon. The students that do not need their balloon will walk over to the basket that is in the center of the gym and place their balloon inside.
3. Each group will volley the balloon back and forth, trying to keep it from touching the floor. Remind them to tap the balloon near their foreheads with their thumbs and fingers.
4. Each
group will try to volley the balloon back and forth using only their heads.
5. Each
group will try to volley the balloon back and forth using only their elbows.
6. Each
group will try to volley the balloon back and forth using only their knees.
7. The
students will try to kick the balloon back and forth in the air using their
feet.
8. Finally,
each student will take turns catching and striking the balloon back and
forth. One student will strike the
balloon to their partner who in turn, tries to catch the balloon.
VII. Behavioral
Objectives
Cognitive: After the lesson, the student will be able to identify the various ways to manipulate a balloon with their body.
Affective: During the lesson, the student will be able to cooperate with a partner while manipulating a balloon.
Psychomotor: After the lesson, the student will be able to manipulate a balloon with different body parts that were assigned.
VIII. Content Statements
- Includes: back, toes, knees, elbows, fingertips, thumbs, backhand, forehand, balloons
VIIII. Closing Activity – (6-8 minutes)
1. The teacher will form three different groups by combining the red and orange rows, the yellow and green rows, and the blue and purple rows. If the groups are very uneven, combine them to make smaller ones. Each group should have 5-8 students.
2. Each group will form a circle by holding hands.
3. Each student will lie on their backs with their feet and hands in the air.
4. The teacher will stand on the outside of the circle and toss the balloon into the middle. By working together, the students will try to keep the balloon in the air and within their circle by using only their hands and feet. They are not allowed to move from their spots to reach the balloon.
5. The group works as a team to see how many times they can strike the balloon before it falls to the ground. Keep track of which team keeps the balloon in the air the longest.
X. Lesson Assessment
1. The teacher will hand out a homework assignment that will be due the next class period.
2. Each student is required to practice the skills that they learned in class in their own home. If they do not have a balloon to use, they can use a stuffed animal, a soft ball, or anything that resembles a squishy object.
3. Remind the students to have their parent or guardian sign the homework sheet once it is completed.
XI. Lesson Design
- The lesson attempts to maximize participation.
