Mission: "Find the Missing Fairy Tales" Web Lesson
You and your partner have just graduated from Fairy Tale College. Before you can get your diploma you have to prove through a mission that you know Fairy Tales. Luckily for you, thieves are always stealing Fairy Tales from Librarys. You just have to wait for them to strike again.

Oh no! The Library in Denmark has been robbed! They have hired you and your partner to find out as much as you can about the three stories by Hans Christian Andersen that were stolen. The first story they need you to track down is
The Emperors New Clothes.

1. Go to
http://www.emperorsnewsuit.com/en/textonly. Read the story and then summarize with your partner the most important parts of the story. Is the story the same one you have always known? If not, then tell your partner what is different. Remember, there is always more than one side to the story!

2. Go to "Play a game" on the page that is already open. Here you can dress the emperor in several different outfits.
What outfit do you think the Emperor thought was being made for him?

Now that you have found the Emperors New Suit, the library needs you to find
The Ugly Duckling.

3. Go to
http://www.mrque.web66.com/the_ugly_duckling_page_1.htm. Read the story. If you want you can play the music on the site as you read the story.

4. Click on "Comprehension Quiz" at the bottom of the page and take the quiz. Ignore the instructions about your parents, do the quiz with your partner instead. If you are unsure about an answer, you may review the story.
Don't forget to print your answers.

The Library needs your help with only one more story. Could you please help them to find
The Little Mermaid?

5. Go to
http://www.storybookcastle.com/stories/stories/?source_file=the_little_mermaid. Read the story with your partner. Note the differences from what you have seen in the Disney movie (if you saw it). What was different? What was the same? Write the answers in your notebook.

6. Go to
http://disney.go.com/games/sharkcave/ and play the game.

Oh no! While you were on your trip looking for these three stories, the library in Germany has also been robbed. They heard of the good job you did helping the Library in Denmark and have hired you to help them find their missing Grimm Brothers Stories.

If you help this library as well it will help you get your diploma sooner. Can you help them find
Rapunzel first?

7. Go to
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/grimm/index2.html to rebuild some of these classic stories! Can you remember the story of Rapunzel? Try to find the story. (Hint-start by deciding who the main character was: a step mother, animals, or a young girl). Read the story.

Now the Library needs you to help them find the story of
Snow White.

8. Maybe the same website can help you find information about Snow White?
http://nationalgeographic.com/grimm/index2.html. (Hint-don't try looking at the young girl choice, you'll find the story through one of the other links). Read the story.

The final story the Library needs help tracking down is
Hansel and Gretel.

9. Go to http://www.cyberalley.com/G-Home/Galleries/Gallery2/HnslGrtl/HnslGrtl.html and build the story. There seem to be many versions of the story. Decide with your partner what the right answers are by clicking on continue or one of the two other choices,  so that you can tell the library the right story. Why do you think there are so many different ways to tell this story?

Congratulations! You have completed two missions as Fairy Tale detectives. You are well on your way to becoming experts in your field. To be considered experts, you need to take the following quiz. Once this is done, you will be awarded your diploma as a Fairy Tale Detective.

10. Go to
http://www.familygames.com/features/quizzes/ftquiz.html. Do the interactive quiz on this site to test your Fairy Tale knowledge. Print off each page of answers to give to Miss Smiley.

11. Go to http://www.abcteach.com/wordpuzzles/onlinepuzzles/fairytale.html. Doing this will help you review information you studied before your two recent missions.

12. Congratulations you are completely done! Go to
http://www.teachnet.com/graphics/how-to/endofyear-certificates/achievement.pdf to print off your Diploma. Bring it along with your quiz answers to your Supervisor (Miss Smiley), to have her fill it out for you.

This lesson is meant as an ongoing activity linked to a unit in English Language Arts. It should be completed at the end of the unit, so students have a more thorough knowledge base of Fairy Tales.
