Step 1 Go out somewhere and find some wire mesh. I think Home Depot would most likely have it but my dad had some in the backyard so I used that. Cut it to approximately this size with some tin snips or pruning shears.
Step 2 Next use the tin snips to cut the mesh into this shape. Be sure not to cut your finger on any of the mesh because the excess will be sharp. *Note: don't throw any of the excess mesh away, you'll need some later.
Step 3 Fold up all the sides to form the main piece of the shopping cart. That wasn't so hard was it? Remember to hold it like this or it will mess up.
Step 4 Now you need to buy some 8 guage copper wiring from home depot. Get about 2 feet's worth of it, it's just the right amount and for only $0.16 a foot. Bend the wire to these two shapes, it will be the framing of the shopping cart. The piece at the top (farthest away in the picture) is the top framing. The bottom piece closest to the camera is the bottom. Copper is quite easy to bend, but if you're having trouble, just go inside and check the time.
Step 5 Here we're going to need some of that excess mesh I told you to save. Cut the mesh to the size and shape of the bottom framing of the cart. Next use twist ties (or anything else to hold it together) to fasten the mesh to the screening. Twist ties are fantastic for this because they fit through the mesh perfect and you can't even see them all that well.
Step 6 Next we will fasten the basket to the top framework. Do the same thing in step 5, using twist ties to hold the mesh basket to the copper. I used about 6 total. Be sure to run the ties around the mesh and the copper, then twist it quite a bit to ensure a firm hold, and cut off the excess with your tin snips.
Step 7 Now all you have to do is fasten the top and bottom together. As you can see in the above diagram, I ran the bottom wiring through the mesh and used 4 twist ties to secure it. Try to intertwine the top and bottom framework together so it doesn't move around a lot.
Step 8 To finish it off, all you need to do is find any type of wheels (could be tech deck wheels if you want, but they're too small) and fasten it to the cart. I used Fingerboard brand wheels because they're a bit larger than Tech Deck wheels and I thought the blue-white combo looked pretty nice. You can also fasten Lego wheels to it to actually have functional wheels.
