As an athlete Doug was a member of the Huskies track and field team for 5 yrs. He was a team captain in 1997 when the Huskie men won a Can-West Championship. That year Doug won a Can-West silver medal and was ranked second in Canada among CIS university athletes. (There was no CIS national weight throw back then). In 1995, Doug competed in the hammer at the WCSG in Abbotsford. In 1998, he was 8th in the hammer at the Commonwealth Games trials. Doug is a multiple provincial champion in hammer and shot put and was a hammer champion at the Tri-Province senior meet.

Doug Medernach is the throws coach of the University Saskatchewan Huskies track and field team and the Riversdale Athletics. He has previously been a coach with the Saskatoon Track and Field Club and E.D. Feehan High School. He is fully certified level 3 in the throws, and is currently working on his level 4/5 tasks. Doug has also taken level 2 jumps and sprints/hurdles and is a level 4 throws official.

Doug is a clinician for Saskatchewan Athletics and a course conductor for level 2 throws (Technical) and level 1 general track and field (Technical). He has coached Team Sask to almost every major competition and major games including: Jeux Canada Games, Western Canada Games, Senior Nationals, Junior Nationals, Olympic trials, Commonwealth Games trials, Midget Dual vs Alberta, Juvenille Dual Vs Manitoba, Tri-Province Senior, High School Dual vs Manitoba, Pan-Am Games trials, Francophone Games trials, FISU (World Student Games) trials, NACAC trials, and Pan-Am  Juniors trials.
