David Mark Atwell was born and bred in Sydney Australia in 1965. After running
a small business in Sydney from 1986-91, he went to Charles Sturt University
- Mitchell studying History, Politics and Drama. In 1994 he graduated taking
the BA (Liberal Studies) with Distinction. Furthermore, he was awarded
the Lindsay Smith Memorial Prize for meritorious achievement in political
science. In 1996 he graduated from the University of Sydney taking the
MA (History) with Merit. In 1996 he started researching for his PhD topic
Why did Whitlam Lose?: the People, The Press, and The Dismissal for the
University of Newcastle, where he also received the Australian Postgraduate Award. Unfortunately ill health has forced him to leave his PhD work in 2002 & he is still currently on sick leave.
David, during his drama days, has managed 5 theatre productions, been
director of photography on 2 productions, designed 2 sets and has been
the lighting designer for over 20 productions. Among these was the lighting
design for the world premier, in 1993, of Widows by Louis Nowra: the 1994
production, for the Hunter Valley Theatre Company, Diving For Pearls: and
in 1996, in Sydney, the lighting design for Two Black Shoes Theatre Company's
production of Antigone. In 1995 David was a delegate to the People's Constitutional
Convention in Sydney. Finally, he is a life member of the Cromwell Association.
Other areas of interest include Australian History and Politics, Aboriginal Affairs, Political Theory (especially the development of Liberal Democracy), the political ideas of the Commonwealth and Protectorate of England (1640s-1660), the English and American Civil Wars, methodology for inquiry, Alternative & Future History, and Science Fiction.
