MadBrewin' '91 Pontiac Formula
8-00
Just got the car,
But, not the Time/Money to Play With
2-02
& this 4+ month lay off til the
Union Hall calls is KILLIN' ME!!!
All the time but, NOT the cash,
This could've been GREAT!!!
But what the 'Brewer does have;
'91 Formula, 305 LB9 TPI, (yes, it's only the baby 8)
5-speed manual, (least it has that), & yes,..."great" to have, but also a "bitch", (for those who know city crusin'),....
The only mods is when my muffler broke off on Highway 12, it's not that loud but, sounds "great" 'round 3500-4k!!!
4-02
Towing w/a 3rd Gen
(I'll have pics soon)
Just got a 18', '73 Glasspar Bow Rider Citation
I figure 'bout 1500-1600lbs of boat w/trailer.
(Haven't stop @ a truck stop to weigh it yet),....
I looked at the
Reese Hitches at Kragen & the 3-5 day wait, (plus I'd have to install it myself, 1-3 hr.), for $149+ tax made the simple trip to to the local U-Haul for the
U-Haul hitch #24643 Sportframe Rec.
for a '91 Firebird/Formula for $200, (included hitch, installation, wiring package, ball, taco's & brew), everything needed to leave shop-to-home-to-lake in about 1 1/2hrs, the choice, (it was a Thurs. with a new boat in the driveway),.....
They only make the class 1, (rated @ 2000lbs), for a 3rd gen, but "not"
if you have the body kit, the clearance for the draw bar seems to be the problem
but, they're probably able to cut into the bumber if needed.
The best part is that you can drop the 'Bird off, 'cross the street for a couple of taco's & a few brew's & leave in about an hour or so, go home, hitch the boat up in 3 minutes, & be gone!!!
What I like about the Sportframe Rec. is that the ball is removeable so, you have to "look" for the hitch to see it plus, they spliced the wires in the cubby compatrment in the back on the drivers side,...(I didn't like the idea that they didn't do it from the tailight at first like all the rest) but, the slice in the the cubby hole hides the wires great.
You can run the wires right out the back w/the hatch close, (wire dosen't pintch, plenty of movement to slide the wire around w/the hatch close), so you can go from tow-to-cruise in the time it takes to remove the pin, pull out ball, wrap up wire & close the hatch.
Towing with a 'Bird,.....I find the the low end torque on a 305, LB9 isn't as great as one would think from a V8 so I tend to re-con launches before I go, (or see if they have a tractor on site to launch-recover), which seems to be more places then I thought, (smoking tires, or clutch @ a boat launch doesn't look good), and I do not want to walk up to a Toyota V-6 w/$20 & ask, "Dude,.......
Sub-frames,..... since a 3rd gen isn't really made to tow,......I thought about sub-frames but, you're towing a boat, you're not reving 2.5k & going for it, you keep life easy, smooth & cruise, (I do 2500-3000rpm in 4th @ 57-63mph),....I've seen more nods towing @ 60 w/boat then cruisin' 95mph,....you're towing a boat, crank some tunes, off the t-tops & kick!!!
Besides,...I need ski's!
Shocks,.....I drop 'bout 1-1 1/2" in the back w/my still stock, worn out, need shocks set up,.....air shocks would be great to adjust from tow-to-street/strip-mode but, since I have no street/strip mode to go to,.......you're towing a boat, you keep life easy, smooth & cruise,...crank some tunes, off the t-tops & kick!!!
Gas,......I ave. 19-21 cruisin' 70-90mph,....13-14 w/boat in 4th @ 57-63mph, (2500-3000rpm)
Brakes,....stock set-up til I need pads but for now, no problems,.... I netural brake anyway, (changing brake pads is easier then changin' a clutch) besides, down shifting is more for being in the proper gear when you exit a corner than for slowing down/braking,.....you're towing a boat, you keep life easy, smooth & cruise,...crank some tunes, off the t-tops & kick!!!
