Polonius This scene takes place at Polonius' house in Denmark. Polonius has arranged to meet with one of his faithful sevants, paticularlyReynaldo, to track down his son Laertes, and spy on him while in Paris. Later, Ophelia enters the room. She describes a frightening visit from Hamlet, who behaved as if he were insane. Polonius, assuming that Hamlet has been driven mad by love, takes Ophelia immediately to the king to tell what Hamlet had done and his actions. Polonius is quizzing Hamlet about his sanity, whether it is love or the fact that he is insane and he has chosen Ophelia to be his target for his lustful vengeance and nothing else. Polonius is a man who likes to hear his own voice. This is noticeable when he is giving Reynaldo instructions and repeatedly forgot or got off track whilee he was talking. In addition, when he is talking to Hamlet, he does not quite understand Hamlet's way of putting people down and thinks it is his insanity speaking or Polonius is just stupid. Those are both questionable. |
