In Act II Hamlet acts totally nuts. In the first scene he scared Ophelia half to death. Because he loves her, he gently caresses her face, and it seems like he is trying to tell her something but can't. She, being the "fragile", "gentle" person that she is, goes to her father to tell him of the incident. Hamlet seems very disturbed and stressed. And by coming to Ophelia, he hoped to vent his problems, but instead thought it best not to speak to her, to just admit body language insted. In the next scene Hamlet's encounter with Polonius is truly amazing. Hamlet appears calm and natural, then he goes off on Polonius with all this imagery and double-talk. Polonius does not know what to think. Hamlet is simply telling him, your an idiot, and I don't like you. But Polonius believes Hamlet has lost his marbles. Hamlet is truly a weird fellow. He just doesn't come right out and say that Polonius is stupid, but instead he feels the need to play with his head and cnfuse him so he does not know what to tell Claudius. With Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Hamlet tells them he is not really nuts at all. By telling them this, I believe he was testing them, to see if they would run back and tell Claudius. Hamlet may have trusted them a little bit. Enough to tell them the truth. The end of the sceneis very confusing. Hamlet acts crazy on minute and perfectly sane the nest. It is very mind boggling. |
