throne. When Polonius suggests that Hamlet may be "love stricken," I think it assures Claudius that he doesn't know about the murder. But, to be on the safe side he still listens in on the conversation between Ophelia and Hamlet. Another method Claudius devised dealt with Hamlets friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. He asks them to sy on Hamlet and inform him of anything that may help him determine what is bothering him. Suprisingly they agree to do it as if serving their country against a great evil. If they were true friends why would they go behind his back with something this seriuos? Claudius probably made it sound as if Hamlet was going to go crazy or die if they didn't help him. By using his friends I think it will only worsen the problem in their already "dead" relationship. Overall, I feel Claudius is very selfish and definitely digs himself into many holes. The way I see it is, if he didn't want problems such as thesehe shouldn't have committed the crime. |
