Lifeguarding Situations (Item 8 on NLS Test Sheet)
The following information comes directly from the NLS Standards Manual.
Respond to an emergency situation as a single lifeguard or as a member of a lifeguard team; correctly assess and resolve the situation.
Purpose
To apply lifeguarding principles and theoretical knowledge to a practical lifeguarding emergency situation.
Must See
� Recognition and immediate response to situation
� Effective communication (other guards, victim(s), public)
� Appropriate response and execution of procedures
� Selection/demonstration of effective rescue techniques or support role
� Proper use/application of equipment
� Appropriate role in handling of situation
� Accurate communication with EMS at earliest possible moment
� Continued supervision of other patrons
� Concern for good public relations
� Accurate record keeping and appropriate follow-up
Notes
� Emergency situations should cause minimum disruption of facility operation and should efficiently utilize personnel and equipment.
� While the evaluator may subjectively believe that another method of handling the situation is better, the candidate must be objectively measured against the defined criteria outlined in the Must See�s
