Brief History of the Tournament

Started in 1983 to celebrate International Youth Year, the  Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament soon grew to become the most popular of tournaments within the shores of the United Kingdom. The tournament now caters for up to 200 plus teams in eleven competition classes with competing teams coming from afar afield as the U.S.A. In the early days the tournament administration was all carried out manually but two computers now do all the fixtures co-ordination, catering for most last minute adjustments. The tournament is run by a small enthusiastic band of volunteers who take their responsibilities for the tournament very seriously.

Probably the best site in the country with the flat expanse of North Inch parkland catering for up to 50 outdoor courts, camping and long-stay car parking, the adjacent five court Gannochy Sports Centre hosts the men's and women's division of honour games.  The strength of the tournament is that teams are guaranteed games on both days with 11 consolation sections of the competition taking place on the Sunday for teams who have failed to qualify from the Saturday competitions.

Catering for all standards of volleyball ability, the tournament weekend has its own unique social side where volleyballers can experience the enjoyment of the traditional Friday evening Ceilidh Dance with Scottish dancing, tartan and kilts. The Saturday evening disco spectacular sees the tempo increase as players, officials and spectators have the opportunity to continue the festival atmosphere.
