The Ben L. Smith Marching Band is off to a successful start this year.

Under the direction of Terri Gullick, the band has already played in each football game. Behind Gullick is a staff consisting of Ray Reid, assistant band director, Ron Rogers, drum instructor, Cathy Jackson, dance girl instructor, and Angela Mahoney, flag instructor.

“With this staff I don't feel we can be touched,” said trumpet captain Maurice Dunn.

The Marching Eagles have a busy year planned. In addition to Smith’s 11 football games, the band is planning to attend competitions in Halifax (N.C.), South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. Gullick’s group also plans to attend parades, some of which are post-game performances. One big highlight of the fall campaign will be the Homecoming Parade Oct. 16, the night before the Piedmont Triad 3-A contest with Glenn.

“This band is trying to excel from becoming a good band to an excellent band,” said Reid, a Dudley and North Carolina A&T alumnus.

“This band has came a long way,” Rogers added. “If the band stays at rate it is going, we will be hard to beat.”

“What I really want,” said Drum Major Gregory Milton, “is to put a line through every single band we face and know that we gave 110 percent every performance.”

Gullick is also hoping to have a major band competition at Smith. That is still in the planning stages, but she would like to invite both college and high school bands to such a competition.
