Crowder wins county crown; chess team finishes third

By NIVEEN KATTAN

Managing EditorThe Smith chess team took third place in the county tournament.

Matt Crowder, a senior, won the individual county championship. Daniel Lambert was 16th. It was a remarkable performance considering that Smith had not had a team before.

It was the first time Smith has had a chess team in many years, according to coach Jim VonSteen.

The club was formed by a group of students who played the game during lunch in VonSteens room. Announcements were made and the group grew in size. Members include Crowder, Lambert, Luther Weathers, Steve Potts, Zeb Newton, Brad Allen, Chris Hyatt, Antonio Mahoney, Kwajo Ofari, Kerel Fair, Adrian Williams, Sim Wilkes, Josh Cowan, Adam Johnson and Mari Galluci. The meet once a week.

Its not just a group of boring people playing chess, Weathers said. We have fun.

The county tournament was held at Cup-A-Joes on Tate Street March 16. Other participating schools included Page, Dudley and North Forsyth.
