On My Own
by Alicia

[Yui lies in bed
She slowly pulls the covers away from her and sits up.]
And now I’m all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no where to go to

[She stands up and wraps a quilt around her as she advances to her bedroom window.]
Without a home without a friend
Without a face to say hello to.

[She observes the starry night sky and closes her eyes as a soft wind ruffles her hair.]
And now the night is near,
Now I can make believe…

[The stars seem to form Tamahome’s face.
The quilt drops and pools by her feet.
The wind blows harder and Yui braces herself.]
He’s here.
[Yui turns around.
A silhouette of Tamahome is made visible to her.
She reaches out to touch the shadow but it disappears.
Yui draws back.
She runs outside with a threadbare jacket in hand.]
Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping.

[She puts the jacket on.
Yui turns suddenly to make sure no one is following her.
She sees Suboshi passing by.
Suboshi glances at the poorly dressed figure.
He picks up a rock and hurls it at "the boy" not knowing it is Yui.
Yui runs away frightened yet happy Suboshi doesn’t recognize her.]
I think of him and then I’m happy
With the company I’m keeping

[After a long run, she puts her hands on her knees and pants.
She laughs heartily at what happened earlier.
Yui dusts herself, puts her hands in her pockets and walks calmly.]
The city goes to bed
[She looks back once more at "home".]
And I can live inside my head.
[A pretend Tamahome appears to her offering her his hand.
Yui bows and takes his hand.]
On my own
Pretending he’s beside me.

[Tamahome squeezes Yui’s hand and winks at her.
Yui blushes.]
All alone I walk with him till morning
[Yui feels Tamahome’s arm slowly encircling her waist.]
Without him
[He pulls Yui closer and caresses the girl’s face.
Tamahome leans down to kiss Yui.]
I feel his arms around me
And when I louse my way I close my eyes

[Yui is distracted.
She can’t find Tamahome anymore.
She twirls around and shuts her eyes.]
And he has found me.
[She is back in Tamahome’s arms.
He kisses her.]
In the rain
[Yui laughs.
Tamahome embraces the girl and sweeps her up unexpectedly.]
The pavement shines like silver
[He spins her about.
He puts her down again and they dance.]
All the lights are misty in the river
[Yui’s shabby clothes turn into a lovely gown.]
In the darkness
[Everything is dark around them.
All she sees is Tamahome.]
The trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me

[Tamahome kisses her hand and pats it gently.]
Forever and forever.
[Yui embraces Tamahome.
She whispers "I love you" into his ear.]
And I know
[The figure of Tamahome slowly begins to fade.
Yui is startled.
She sees a faint figure of Tamahome blowing her a kiss.
A soft wind dishevels her hair.
She calls to him…
But he is gone.]
It’s only in my mind
[A pair of rough hands grab her from behind.
Yui screams and turns around.
She sees Suboshi.
Embarrassed and angry she pulls away from him and smacks him.]
That I’m talking to my self
And not to him.

[Yui runs away.
Suboshi calls to her as he rubs his cheek.]
And although
I know that he is blind
Still I say
There’s a way for us!

[Yui starts to cry.]
I love him!
But when the night is over

[She looks up at the sky.
The sun is about to rise.]
He is gone, the river’s just a river
[She stops running and catches her breath.
She hears Suboshi calling her and she runs away but stumbles and falls on a muddy puddle.]
Without him
[Bits of the memories she had with Tamahome dance in Yui’s head.
She bites her lip.
Yui tries to get up but she can’t.]
The world around me changes
[Suboshi kneels beside her and puts a blanket around her.
He picks her up and walks away with her.]
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets
Are full of strangers!

[Yui reluctantly lets Suboshi take her back home.
She closes her eyes.
She does not want to face reality.]
I love him!
[She looks up to Suboshi.
His face changes into Tamahome’s just for a second then it becomes Suboshi’s once more.]
But everyday I’m learning
[Yui buries her face into Suboshi’s chest and cries, angry that Tamahome will never love her.]
All my life,
I’ve only been pretending!

[Suboshi holds her close and tries to hush her.]
Without me
[Yui thinks of how much she would have liked to be Suzaku No Miko.
Miaka’s face flashes in her memory and she fumes just to think that Tamahome loves her.]
His world will go on turning
A world that’s full of happiness that I have
Never known!

[Suboshi lays Yui in bed.
He hugs her and brushes her bangs aside.
He gently kisses her forehead.]
I love him,
[Suboshi leaves Yui.
He bangs his fist on Yui’s bedroom wall and curses under his breath.
I love you, Yui.
Just forget about him, he’ll never give you affection…]
I love him,
[Suboshi cowers every time he hears Yui calling Tamahome.]
I love him,
But only…

[Suboshi looks at Yui from a distance.
And it tears up his soul to see her like that.
He leaves, shaking his head sadly.
Yui sits up after a long cry and looks in the mirror.
She combs her hair back.
I love you, Tamahome…]
On my own…

Notes:
Not so long ago, I went to see Les Misèrables, and I tottaly loved it! I loved the music, everything. But one character that I really liked a lot was Eponine. She was strong, courageous, even to the moment of her death. I also liked her single, "On My Own" so much, I wanted to make it into a song fic. However, I had trouble fitting the song into FY. And this is where my best friend comes to play. Thanks Anya!
