X - The Wheel of Fortune - This card has only made symbolic sense recently to me, due to the Aztec and Mayan research on the 20 day count calendar appearing in my Western Mysteries. Traditionally The Wheel of Fortune shows three mythological animals on a spinning wheel, one descending the wheel, one ascending the wheel and a third at the top of the wheel. But in my own version a snake is shown at the bottom of the wheel and a lizard on the top. This is directly from the Aztec day count, for the fourth day is the Day of Cuetzpallin the lizard while the fifth day is the Day of Coatl, the serpent. By the symbolism of these day signs the serpent crushed by the bottom of the wheel represents the ragged beggar and misfortune while the lizard riding the top of the wheel represents the prosperous man and good fortune, the two extremes of the wheel of fortune. Though I had yet to be exposed to the symbolism of the Waite deck I intuitively put 4 clouds in the 4 corners to symbolize the 4 elements. The eight spokes of the wheel connect this card with the Tibetan Wheel of Rebirth. This card symbolizes the mysteries of Eastern Buddhism.
