XI - Strength - This card is a great departure from the classic image of a woman opening the mouth of a lion. Here the Taoist/Buddhist symbolism of water as the strongest element on earth is used as the sea breaking upon a sandy beach. Rather than Leo, the color coding for Scorpio is shown in the blue green sea and the predominate use of red. However, Leo is the color yellow and is ruled by the sun. This is shown in the yellow sun at sunrise in the background of the card. The rising sun of the East emerging out of the endless sea of Binah is also the symbol for the Order of the Golden Dawn.  The artistic convention of a red framed window in the shape of the number 8 looking into the heart of the ocean and viewing the scene as black and white conceals a mystery over the order of the Tarot. For in the older Exoteric Tarot Strength was the eleventh key following the Wheel of Fortune. But in the Esoteric Tarot Strength bears the number eight, shown as a bold red 8 in the center of this card.
