RESOURCES FOR THE BEGINNING STUDENT - II

The first thing that you should commit to memory is the basic attributes of the Tarot in relation to the Hebrew alphabet.  Next you should memorize the attributions of the Tree of Life. These two systems are the basic A, B, Cs of Modern Occult Magick. Until you can effortlessly bring up in memory the astrological attributes of the Tarot, as well as the corresponding colors, numbers, and Hebrew alphabet letters, complex systems such as Enochian magick should be avoided. Magick is a work of memory. The magical memory is really an alternate language, an alternate way of thinking. As you program your subconscious with these ancients symbols, new insights will blossom within you in the forms of dreams, waking visions, and new connections between separate systems of Western Magical tradition leading to inspirations.

You should also consider building a number dictionary of words turned to their number values using one of the many sacred languages that possess a magical number code. I would recommend Hebrew or Greek as a beginning point. Get a good classical dictionary in either language, and begin turning to number words that are meaningful to you. Page xli of my introduction to The Eastern Mysteries will guide you in forming your own number-language dictionary.

For Hebrew I recommend William Gesenius, Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament (Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1978).
For Greek I recommend Henry Liddell and Robert Scott, The Greek Language Dictionary (Oxford, 1940).

Finally, you should get a translation of the Hebrew Qabalistic-Cosmological Text, The Book of Formation. One of the best versions is Aryeh Kaplan, Sefer Yetzirah (Weiser, 1997). This is the ancient textbook that serves as a key to unlocking the astrological and Qabalistic symbolism of the Tarot.

I hope my recommendations will aid you in your beginning steps on the path of wisdom, that is enshrined in the Western Magical tradition. One more suggestion that I can think of is the development of a personal magical diary. Try to enter into a diary format your magical discoveries and developments. This will mean very much to you in your later years of work, for it will serve as a yardstick of your development.
