THE CUBE OF SPACE AND THE TRIGRAM COMPASSES

Jenifer Asked:
"I've been looking for a way to bring the cube of space together with King Wen's Earthly Trigram Compass--seeking insights and applications as I use the Earthly compass to help my clients bring their spaces into alignment."

David Allen Hulse answered:
"I have given this some thought and I think that the cube of space is a bridge between Fu Hsi's heavenly compass and King Wen's earthly compass.
The Heavenly compass would be placed on the ABOVE face or top of the cube. The Earthly compass would be placed on the BELOW face or the bottom of the cube.
The coordinates between the Tarot cards, the directions in space and the two sets of trigrams are as follows:

King Wen's Earthly Trigram Compass:
(Direction-Trigram-Tarot-Cube)

SOUTH-Li-Key 18 The Moon (South below)
NORTH-K'an-Key 9 The Hermit (North Below)
EAST-Chen-Key 7 The Chariot (East Below)
WEST-Tui-Key 15 The Devil (West Below)
NORTHWEST-Ch'ien- Key 11 Justice (Northwest)
SOUTHWEST-K'un-Key 13 Death (Southwest)
SOUTHEAST-Sun-Key 5 The Hierophant (Southeast)
NORTHEAST-Ken-Key 4 The Emperor (Northeast)

(Note: the 4 oblique directions NW SW SE NE are at the bottom four corners of the cube -they are where these 4 directional pillars are joined to the bottom of the cube)

Fu Hsi's Heavenly Trigram Compass
(Direction-Trigram-Tarot-Cube)

SOUTH- Ch'ien-Key 17 The Star (South Above)
NORTH- K'un - Key 8 Strength (North Above)
EAST- Li - Key 6 The Lovers (East Above)
WEST- K'an - Key 14 Temperance (West Above)
NORTHWEST- Ken- Key 11 Justice (Northwest)
SOUTHWEST- Sun-Key 13 Death (Southwest)
SOUTHEAST- Tui-Key 5 The Hierophant (Southeast)
NORTHEAST- Chen-Key 4 The Emperor (Northeast)

(Note: the 4 oblique directions NW SW SE NE are at the top four corners of the cube- they are where these 4 directional pillars are joined to the top of the cube)

By this pattern the cube can be used for both compass orientations. Using the earthly compass you view the cube from the bottom. Using the heavenly compass you view the cube from the top.The various zodiacal Tarot cards that fall to each trigram arrangement work well with the Eastern symbolism for that specific direction on the 8-fold compass.
In my own magical working with the I Ching I have always found the compass of Fu Hsi to be most balanced and profound in its grouping of 8 to 8 directions. Always felt that the Earthly compass was not balanced but rather tipped heavily towards the western point of the compass."
