THE MYSTICISM OF THE GREEK ALPHABET In the meantime, here is a brief synopsis from GAMES OF THE GODS: ALPHA- bull, cattle BETA- the demon of duality GAMMA-Godliness DELTA-four elements, directions EPSILON-ether and the Aion ZETA-offering, sacrifice ETA-joy, love THETA- the eighth sphere of the zodiac IOTA- destiny KAPPA- bad luck, death LAMBDA- the growth of plants MU- the stars OMICRON- the sun PI- the sun as Mithras and Christ RHO- fruitfulness SIGMA- the God of Death TAU- human beings UPSILON- water PHI- phallus CHI- property PSI- heavenly light OMEGA- riches and abundance These attributes seem quite arbitrary to me, based on number symbolism in general, and on the initial letter of certain words in Greek. However, it is the first attempt in print to bring a hieroglyphic sense to Greek. A new book has just come into print to add to our knowledge of the Greek Qabalah. It comes highly recommended: "The Greek Qabalah, Alphabet Mysticism and Numerology in the Ancient World", by Kieren Barry (Weiser Books, 2000). |
