“Please - Santa”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --

Santa passed by our house,
this last Christmas Day.
My Daddy wasn’t working,
thus he had no pay.
Though Santa makes toys cheaply,
using labor of little elves.
Still there must be a price tag,
the toys sit upon the shelves.
Santa could not make an exception,
though I was a good little boy.
So therefore I spent last Christmas,
playing with an old beat up toy.
This Christmas I pray be different,
though Daddy has gone away.
I wrote a letter to Santa,
that he know where I stay.
I live alone with Mother,
our cupboard is kind of bare.
I asked not a toy to play,
but a coat for Mothers’ wear.
