“For Mother”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --

A little blonde haired girl,
sat solemn on Santa’s knee.
Her coat was worn and ragged,
he guessed her age as 2 times 3.

Though she was not sweet smelling,
her face was mostly clean.
Santa had a hard time listening,
as closer her lips he lean.

She said there in a soft whisper,
her voice turned way down low.
“Santa, I'm here to ask for Mother,
she's gone from us you know”.

“She left on Christmas Day,
of this year just gone past”.
“I know she'll not return again,
her sleep I'm told will last”.

“I pray she’s with the Angels,
there in the Promised Land”.
“Please give my love to Momma,
tell her I understand”.
