“Yankee Widow”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyright 2000 --

Therein a churchyard cemetery,
a widow knelt to pray.
The graveplot of her husband,
died in battle with the gray.

He died upon a battlefield,
so very distant far away.
Brought him home in a pinebox,
here for his body stay.

The children they would miss him,
as they grew in age.
Three sons and a daughter,
still in the youthful stage.

Somehow she would make do,
the family rich in love.
God would smile down upon them,
His guidance from high above.

Now she had gained the strength,
from her quiet prayers there.
For he was still near beside her,
though body not to share.
