“The Wait”
-- by Joseph C. Dorffner, Sr. - Copyrigght 2000 --

The soldiers cold and weary,
laid upon the damp, hard ground.
There came as distant thunder,
the retort of cannon sound.

Soon they had to do battle,
and stand up for their cause.
These moments of rest and reflection,
came with a marching pause.

The chaplain came upon them,
led them in prayer and grace.
Prayed to the Lord in Heaven,
hold open that Holy place.

Some wept in their sorrows,
others the tears of fear.
To die in painful agony,
so many young in year.

Then came unexpected orders,
this skirmish not to be fought.
To wait another day or so,
much bigger prize be bought.
